Toronto Argonauts sign WR Trea Shropshire and LB Khalan Tolson

The Toronto Argonauts signed wide receiver Trea Shropshire and linebacker Khalan Tolson on Tuesday. In addition, the Argonauts announced that Richard Burton had retired.

Trea Shropshire is six foot three and weighs 195 pounds. The 23-year-old from Zachary, Louisiana, was drafted by both the Memphis Showboats in the eighth round (59th pick) in the 2023 USFL College Draft, and the D.C. Defenders in the 2023 XFL Rookie Draft.

Shropshire chose to sign with the D.C. Defenders but was released on March 10, 2024. Before D.C., Shropshire attended mini-camps with the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings.

Collegiately, Shropshire played three seasons at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (2020-22) making 72 catches for 1,548 yards, 11 touchdowns, one carry for -2 yards, and two tackles (1 solo, 1 assist) in 31 games for the Blazers.

In 2022, Shropshire was the team’s leading receiver making 35 catches for 730 yards, and five touchdowns in 11 games. He was named a two-time All-C-USA Honorable Mention.

Khalan Tolson is six foot and weighs 235 pounds. The 24-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida, made 76 tackles (41 solo, 35 assists), three tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and one pass breakup in ten games for the Houston Gamblers (USFL) in 2023.

The Gamblers signed Tolson as a free agent on January 20, 2023. Tolson was released by the Houston Roughnecks on March 10, 2024. Before Houston, Tolson signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2022.

Collegiately, Tolson played four seasons at Illinois (2018-21) with 130 tackles (69 solo, 61 assists), 10 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 42 games for the Fighting Illini.

Richard Burton is six foot and weighs 183 pounds. The 25-year-old from Ottawa, Ontario, attended the Argonauts training camp in 2023. The Argo’s drafted Burton in the sixth round (47th pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Burton played five seasons at Queen’s University (2018-23) with 131 catches for 2,016 yards, nine touchdowns, two carries for 12 yards, one kickoff for 47 yards, five kickoff returns for 91 yards, 19 punt returns for 160 yards, and one touchdown in 31 games for the Gaels.
