The Montreal Alouettes (8-1) hosted the Edmonton Elks (6-3) on Saturday afternoon at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium in their second meeting of the season. The Elks previously beat the Alouettes 32-24 in overtime back in Week 3.
Montreal got the ball to start the game at the 33-yard line. Quarterback Davis Alexander threw five passes for 45 yards to the eight-yard line. On the next play, Alexander tossed the ball to Tyson Philpot, who then pitched the ball to Tyler Snead. Snead threw the ball intended for Cole Spieker in the endzone, where it was intercepted by Tyrell Ford.
It was Ford’s fourth interception of the season. Justin Rankin rushed for 17 yards before Cody Fajardo had two carries for 16 yards before the drive stalled. Edmonton had the ball on the 22-yard line. Running back Justin Rankin had two carries for 18 yards, and Cody Fajardo threw two passes for17 yards to the 53-yard line. On third down, Edmonton punter Jake Julien’s punt was blocked by Kylan Guidry and recovered by Donovan Manuel on the 53-yard line.
Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander threw two passes for 43 yards, including a 32-yarder to Tyler Snead to the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Davis Alexander scrambled out of the pocket, getting the defense to bite with a pump fake to score a 10-yard touchdown. The Alouettes took a 7-0 lead with 58 seconds left on a four-play drive for 53 yards.
Edmonton had the ball on the 47-yard line. They moved the ball 16 yards to the 47-yard line to end the first quarter. Montreal’s offense had 106 yards. Davis Alexander went 8 of 10 for 92 yards, one carry for 10 yards, and one rushing touchdown. Edmonton’s offense had 80 yards. Cody Fajardo went 3 of 6 for 24 yards, and two carries for 10 yards.
In the second quarter, Edmonton quarterback Cody Fajardo threw two passes for 24 yards to the 23-yard line. Running back Javon Leake had two carries for nine yards, plus a face mask penalty on Montreal moved the ball to the one-yard line. Cody Fajardo scored the touchdown, tying the game 7-7 with 12:10 left on an eight-play drive for 63 yards.
Montreal had the ball on the 54-yard line. Davis Alexander threw three passes for 43 yards, including a 27-yarder to Travis Theis, while Theis had a carry for five yards, Terry Wilson rushed for a yard, and Rushawn Baker rushed for three yards to the four-yard line. Travis Theis lost two yards before Davis Alexander, with great protection from the offensive line, threw a six-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Tyson Philpot. The Alouettes took a 14-7 lead with 7:03 left on an eight-play drive for 61 yards.
Late in the second quarter, Montreal had the ball on the 13-yard line. Two plays later, Edmonton’s defense brought pressure, forcing Alexander out of the pocket. He threw the ball right into the hands of Edmonton defensive back Tyrell Ford for a 30-yard return to the six-yard line. It was Ford’s second interception of the game.
Edmonton quarterback Cody Fajardo threw a touchdown pass to T.J. Luther, but after further review, the officials ruled it an incomplete pass. Two plays later, Fajardo threw a touchdown pass to Joshua Cephus. The game was tied 14-14 with 2:57 left.
Montreal started its next drive on the 47-yard line. Running back Travis Theis rushed for 21 yards to the 42-yard line. Two plays later, Theis rushed for 24 yards to the nine-yard line. Then, Alexander threw a short pass to Tyson Philpot, who extended his arms to break the plane for the touchdown. The Alouettes took a 21-14 lead with 1:51 left on a four-play drive for 63 yards.
Edmonton had the ball on the 38-yard line. They moved the ball to the 18-yard line before kicker Vincent Blanchard made a 25-yard field goal. It was now 21-17 with 24 seconds left. Two plays later, Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander threw a short pass to Tyler Snead for 56 yards to the 11-yard line. Kicker Jose Maltos Diaz made a 20-yard field goal for a 24-17 lead at halftime.
Montreal’s offense had 287 yards. Davis Alexander went 15 of 18 for 215 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, one carry for 10 yards, and one rushing touchdown. Running back Travis Theis had seven carries for 58 yards, and three catches for 41 yards. Wide receiver Tyler Snead made three catches for 99 yards, while Tyson Philpot made five catches for 41 yards and two touchdowns.
Edmonton’s offense had 201 yards. Cody Fajardo went 11 of 18 for 107 yards, one touchdown, four carries for 30 yards, and one rushing touchdown. Running back Justin Rankin had five carries for 54 yards. Wide receiver Austin Mack made five catches for 48 yards, while Kaion Julien-Grant made three catches for 32 yards, and Joshua Cephus made one catch for six yards and one touchdown.
Edmonton got the ball to start the third quarter on the 35-yard line. Three plays in, Cody Fajardo threw a six-yard line pass to Austin Mack. Montreal defensive back Kabion Ento hit the ball out, and it was recovered by Gemon Green on the 43-yard line. Travis Theis rushed for a yard, followed by Alexander throwing a 10-yard pass to Tyson Philpot to the 32-yard line. Then, Alexander threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Tyler Snead for a 31-17 lead with 11:36 left.
Edmonton had the ball on the 44-yard line. They moved the ball to the 50-yard line before Cody Fajardo’s pass intended for Austin Mack was intercepted by Tyrice Beverette at the 28-yard line. The Alouettes moved the ball to the 30-yard line, where kicker Jose Maltos Diaz made a 38-yard field goal for a 34-17 lead with 2:56 left. Edmonton had the ball for the rest of the third quarter. Cody Fajardo threw three passes for 30 yards, and rushed for 10 yards, plus a penalty on Montreal moved the ball to the 29-yard line to end the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Edmonton moved the ball two more yards before kicker Vincent Blanchard missed a 34-yard field goal wide right. Montreal returner DeVonte Dedmon conceded the single point. It was now 34-18 with 13:13 left in the game.
Later in the fourth quarter, Montreal had the ball on the 35-yard line. The Alouettes moved the ball to the 54-yard line. Then, Alexander threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Tyson Philpot for a 41-18 lead with 5:37 left on a five-play drive for 75 yards.
Edmonton had the ball on the 38-yard line. Montreal’s defense was called for two defensive pass interference penalties that moved the ball to the 33-yard line. On the next play, Cody Fajardo threw a touchdown pass to Austin Mack. They attempted a two-point conversion, but did not get it. It was now 41-24 with 3:57 left on a four-play drive for 73 yards.
Montreal had the ball on the 44-yard line. Davis Alexander rushed for seven yards before throwing an incomplete pass to Tyson Philpot. Edmonton was called for a defensive pass interference penalty, and the ball was placed on the one-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Terry Wilson scored the touchdown for a 48-24 lead with 2:45 left on a four-play drive for 44 yards.
Late in the game, Taylor Powell was the new quarterback for Edmonton. He led the offense to the six-yard line before throwing a touchdown pass to Carter Kettyle. They went for a two-point conversion, but did not get it. It was now 48-30 with a minute left on a seven-play drive for 77 yards. Dustin Crum finished the game for Montreal as time expired. The Alouettes beat the Elks 48-30.
Montreal’s offense had 481 yards (352 passing yards, 129 rushing yards), 26 first downs, 4 for 4 in the redzone, and the team was penalized seven times for 89 yards. Quarterback Davis Alexander completed 22 of 28 passes (78.5%) for 352 yards, four touchdowns, one interception, one carry for 10 yards, and one rushing touchdown. Running back Travis Theis had 14 carries for 100 yards, and three catches for 41 yards.
Wide receiver Tyler Snead made five catches for 146 yards and one touchdown, while Tyson Philpot made 10 catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns. The defense made 42 tackles, two tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
Edmonton’s offense had 407 yards (286 passing yards, 125 rushing yards, 4 yards lost), 31 first downs, 3 for 3 in the redzone, and the team was penalized five times for 68 yards. Quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 21 of 35 passes (60%) for 231 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, six carries for 43 yards, and one rushing touchdown. Taylor Powell completed 6 of 7 passes (85.7%) for 55 yards, one touchdown, and one carry for seven yards.
Running back Justin Rankin had seven carries for 62 yards. Wide receiver Austin Mack made nine catches for 110 yards and one touchdown, while Brendan O’Leary-Orange made six catches for 56 yards. The defense made 41 tackles, one tackle for loss, and two interceptions.
Next Saturday, the Edmonton Elks host the Toronto Argonauts at 3 pm on TSN and CFL+, while the Montreal Alouettes are on a bye week.
