The NTT IndyCar Series visited World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, on Sunday night for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline. Alex Palou started the race on the pole, with David Malukas starting second.
Palou led the opening 46 laps before making a pit stop. Marcus Ericsson took the lead and led five laps before stopping for tires and fuel. Ericsson’s crew got him out quick. Scott Dixon led three laps when Alex Palou made contact with Nolan Siegel at Turn, sending Siegel hard into the wall. The caution was one of four throughout the race. After Dixon made a pit stop, Marcus Ericsson took the lead on lap 56. Ericsson led a race-high 114 of 250 laps.
Later in the race, Ericsson was leading as many teams were changing up their strategies due to rain on the way. Scott Dixon stayed out when a light sprinkle hit the track on lap 197. The sprinkle did not last long. Dixon, Palou, Josef Newgarden, and Ericsson all went to pit road. Newgarden came out as the new leader.
Newgarden was battling Christian Rasmussen for the lead. They traded the lead several times before Newgarden took the lead for good. Kyffin Simpson suffered a mechanical issue on lap 226, and rain once again returned. However, the rain stopped quickly. Teams went to pit road, and Alex Palou’s car ran out of fuel. He coasted to his pit box and came out two laps down. The race resumed on lap 234. Marcus Ericsson passed Rasmussen for second place.
Newgarden led the final 40 laps to win his second race of the season by 0.6613 seconds over Marcus Ericsson. It was also his 34th career win and he led a total of 53 laps. Christian Rasmussen, Rinus VeeKay, and Scott McLaughlin rounded out the top five. Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Will Power, Marcus Armstrong, and Christian Lundgaard completed the top ten.
