Saskatchewan Roughriders sign DB Malcolm Bell, release 11 players

The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed defensive back Malcolm Bell on Wednesday.

Malcolm Bell is six foot two and weighs 188 pounds. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Bell attended the Cleveland Browns rookie minicamp last week. The Saskatchewan Roughriders drafted Bell in the first round (9th pick) of the 2026 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Bell spent four seasons at the University of Connecticut (2021-24) with 94 tackles (68 solos, 26 assists), four tackles for loss, 13 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one blocked kick in 33 games for the Huskies. In 2022, he made a career-high 39 tackles (26 solos, 13 assists), 1.5 tackles for loss, six pass breakups, and one blocked kick in 12 games.

Then, he transferred to Michigan State in 2025 with a new career-high 49 tackles (31 solos, 18 assists), five tackles for loss, one sack, and six pass breakups in 12 games for the Spartans.

The Roughriders also made these announcements:

Kicker Alex Hale was activated from the retired list.

Defensive back Jerry Jacobs was moved to the retired list.

Running back Thomas Bertrand-Hudon was activated from the veteran injured list.

The Roughriders also released the following players:

Quarterback Jordan McCloud, running back Darrell Henderson Jr., wide receivers Juwann Winfree and Ali Jennings III, offensive linemen Dayton Black and Yoesph Carter, defensive linemen Thor Griffith and Sylvain Yondjouen, linebacker Demouy Kennedy, defensive back Nafees Lyon, and kicker Michael Hughes.
