The B.C. Lions received some devastating news on Wednesday that defensive lineman Nathan Cherry will miss the rest of the 2023 season due to a knee injury sustained last week against Saskatchewan.

Nathan Cherry is six foot three and weighs 245 pounds. The 25-year-old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, made seven tackles and one sack in ten games for the Lions in 2023, of which one was a start.

“We were holding out some hope but he’s going to be done for the year,” said head coach and co-general manager Rick Campbell to the media. “He’s a young guy, good player and we’ll look forward to having him next year.”

The Lions drafted Cherry in the first round (3rd pick) of the 2022 CFL Draft. In his rookie season, Cherry made seven tackles and one sack in 17 games, of which seven were starts.

Collegiately, Cherry played five seasons at the University of Saskatchewan (2016-19, 2021) with 45 tackles (38 solo, 18 assists), 12.5 tackles for loss, ten sacks, and one fumble recovery in 41 games for the Huskies.

The Lions (7-3) host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-6) for their first meeting of the season this Sunday at 7 pm on CFL+. Subscribe to Fubo to watch all of the 2023 CFL Season. Purchase CFL tickets today on StubHub and Viagogo.
