The United Football League (UFL) announced on Sunday during a launch party at Weidner Field that the new Colorado franchise will be called the Colorado Stampede.

“The excitement in the Springs from the moment we announced a Colorado team has been palpable, and we’re incredibly excited to introduce the Colorado Stampede as the newest addition to the United Football League,” said UFL President & CEO Russ Brandon. “The Stampede name is rooted in the state’s rich heritage and the rugged, independent spirit of the Great Plains and western frontier. More than anything, the name represents power, grit, and an unstoppable force moving forward as one. Those are the same qualities we want this team to embody on the field – a physical, relentless group that plays with toughness and competes together for this fanbase. We can’t wait for this team to charge into Weidner Field for the first time on April 11 and show Colorado what it means to ride with the Stampede.”

This will be the first professional spring football team for the state of Colorado since the Denver Gold of the USFL (1983-85) that played their games at Mile High Stadium. The Gold made one playoff appearance in 1985 when they lost to the Memphis Showboats in the USFL playoffs. Colorado has also supported various semi-pro and indoor football teams over the years, including the Colorado Ice, Colorado Crush, and Colorado Spartans.

The Stampede logo features a bison with a bold “C” for Colorado, while the mountains of the Springs rise up from its mane, and the horns have a subtle “S” for the Springs hidden in the curve.

The head coach for the Stampede will be Rick Neuheisel, who also brings his coaching staff and players from the 2026 Dallas Renegades. Neuheisel coached the University of Colorado Buffaloes to a 33-14 record from 1995-98, recording Cotton Bowl victories in his first two years, and finishing the 1996 season ranked No. 4 in the nation. The Stampede will play their home games at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs.

The team will look to add players through the UFL Showcase, free agency, and the 2027 UFL Draft in St. Louis, Missouri, on November 18. Colorado will have the 2nd overall pick in the First Round, and the 4th pick in the Second Round. The Stampede’s inaugural home game will be on Sunday, April 11, 2027, at 3 pm ET/ 1 pm MT. Season tickets are now on sale starting at $75.
