The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (55-52, 23-19) battled the Fredericksburg Nationals (67-42, 21-22) on Wednesday night at Segra Stadium. Juan Fraide was on the mound for Fayetteville against Marlon De La Cruz of Fredericksburg. The game was set to seven innings after the Woodpeckers completed their Tuesday game.
In the bottom of the second inning, Fayetteville right fielder Ben Tryon hit a two-out solo home run to right field to put the Woodpeckers up 1-0. It was his first home run of the season. A flyout by Jadyn Fielder ended the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Fayetteville had a runner on second base with one out when Arturo Flores hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Waner Luciano for a 2-0 lead. Later, Fayetteville would have runners on second and third base with two outs when Luis De Leon hit a two-run RBI single to right field, scoring Arturo Flores and Jadyn Fielder for a 4-0 lead. A flyout by Brandon Nigh ended the inning.
Fayetteville starter Juan Fraide went six innings, allowing three hits, three walks, and five strikeouts, throwing 86 pitches, of which 58 were strikes. Tazwell Butler pitched for Fayetteville at the top of the seventh inning. Butler struck out one, throwing nine pitches, of which seven were strikes, to get the final three outs of the game.
The Woodpeckers shut out the Nationals with a 4-0 win. Fayetteville finished the night with seven hits, went 2 for 2 with runners in scoring position, and left two men on base. The win went to Fayetteville starter Juan Fraide (5-1), and the loss went to Fredericksburg starter Marlon De La Cruz (0-5).
The Woodpeckers and Nationals play game three on Thursday at 6:35 pm on the MLB App and Bally Sports Live. Ryan Forcucci (0-4, 16.53 ERA) will be on the mound for Fayetteville against Alexander Meckley (4-5, 4.73 ERA) of Fredericksburg.
