The Toronto Argonauts acquired punter James Burnip from the Ottawa Redblacks for a conditional 2027 eight-round draft pick.

James Burnip is six foot six and weighs 236 pounds. The 25-year-old from Mount Macedon, Victoria, Australia, was drafted by the Ottawa Redblacks in the second round (14th pick) of the 2025 CFL Global Draft.

The New Orleans Saints signed Burnip as an undrafted free agent on April 26, 2025. In 2025, Burnip punted the ball five times for 188 yards (37.6 AVG), with a long of 49 yards, three from 50-plus yards, two fair catches, and one out of bounds in three preseason games. The Saints released him on August 25, 2025.

The Redblacks signed him on January 20, 2026. In 2026, Burnip punted the ball eight times for 360 yards (45 AVG), with a long of 70 yards in two preseason games.

Collegiately, Burnip played four seasons at Alabama (2021-24), punting the ball 201 times for 8,808 yards (43.8 AVG), with a long of 67 yards, 13 touchbacks, 85 fair catches, 70 from inside the 20-yard line, 50 from 50-plus yards, and one kickoff for 48 yards in 55 games for the Crimson Tide.

In 2024, he punted the ball 52 times for 2,359 yards (45.4 AVG), with a long of 64 yards, four touchbacks, 25 fair catches, 19 from inside the 20-yard line, 20 from 50-plus yards, and one kickoff for 48 yards in 13 games.
