Louisville Kings take one step closer to clinching a playoff spot in a win over Dallas

The Louisville Kings (5-4) hosted the Dallas Renegades (3-6) on Sunday afternoon from Lynn Family Stadium.

In the first quarter, Dallas had the ball on the 36-yard line. Running back Ellis Merriweather rushed for 20 yards to the 44-yard line. The offense moved the ball to the 36-yard line. On fourth down, quarterback Austin Reed threw a short pass to Tyler Vaughns.

Vaughns had a blocker in front of him to score the 36-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead to conclude a five-play drive for 64 yards. Late in the first quarter, Louisville returner Lucky Jackson had a punt return for a touchdown called back on a penalty. Louisville kicker Tanner Brown made a 45-yard field goal. The Kings trailed the Renegades 7-3. Dallas moved the ball to the 24-yard line to end the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Dallas kicker Colton Theaker made a 49-yard field goal to give the Renegades a 10-3 lead. Midway through the second quarter, Louisville quarterback Chandler Rogers threw a 31-yard pass to Tarik Black to the 27-yard line. Louisville moved the ball to the one-yard line, where Chandler Rogers scored the touchdown. The game was tied 10-10 to conclude an eight-play drive for 73 yards.

Late in the second quarter, Louisville’s offense moved the ball to the 16-yard line. Kicker Tanner Brown made a 35-yard field goal. The Kings led the Renegades 13-10 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Louisville kicker Tanner Brown made a 54-yard field goal for a 16-10 lead. Dallas had the ball on the 34-yard line. They moved the ball to the 22-yard line. Kicker Cole Theaker attempted a 40-yard field goal, but he missed wide left. On the last play of the third quarter, quarterback Austin Reed threw a short pass to Seth Green for 17 yards to the 18-yard line. The Renegades trailed the Kings 16-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Dallas quarterback Austin Reed threw a short pass to Curtis Hodges for a 12-yard touchdown. The Renegades took a 17-16 lead to conclude a seven-play drive for 69 yards. Louisville had the ball on the 49-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Chandler Rogers threw the ball to Isaiah Winstead for a 40-yard touchdown. The Kings converted a two-point play for a 24-17 lead to conclude a three-play drive for 60 yards.

Dallas had the ball on the 45-yard line. Louisville defensive back Eric Garror picked off Reed at the 31-yard line. Eight plays later, Louisville made Dallas pay when running back Ian Wheeler scored a one-yard touchdown. They were unable to get the two-point conversion, and led Dallas 30-17 to conclude an eight-play drive for 65 yards.

Dallas went four-and-out on their next drive, and Louisville got the ball on the 39-yard line. Four plays later, quarterback Chandler Rogers threw a 22-yard touchdown to Tarik Black for a 37-17 lead to conclude a five-play drive for 39 yards.

Late in the game, Luke Lehnen was the new quarterback for Dallas. On the third play, he threw a 38-yard pass to Emmanuel Butler to the 24-yard line. Three plays later, running back Lorenzo Lingard scored a 12-yard touchdown. Kicker Cole Theaker missed the extra point with a minute and thirty seconds left in the game.

Dallas went for the 4th and 12 play, but did not get the first down. Louisville took over and ran out the clock. The Kings defeated the Renegades 37-23. With the loss, Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention. Meanwhile, Louisville is in a great position to clinch a playoff spot next week. The Kings have won three straight games, while the Renegades have lost their last six games since starting the season 3-0.

Louisville’s offense had 470 yards (266 passing yards, 205 rushing yards), 24 first downs, 2 for 5 in the redzone, and the team was penalized 13 times. Quarterback Chandler Rogers completed 16 of 21 passes (76.2%) for 266 yards, two touchdowns, seven carries for 21 yards, and one rushing touchdown. Running back Ian Wheeler had 13 carries for 93 yards and one rushing touchdown, while James Robinson had 22 carries for 88 yards.

Wide receiver Tarik Black made four catches for 82 yards and one touchdown, while Isaiah Winstead made two catches for 44 yards and one touchdown. The defense made 35 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and five pass breakups.

Dallas had 234 yards on offense (139 passing yards, 107 rushing yards), 14 first downs, 2 for 2 in the redzone, and the team was penalized seven times. Quarterback Austin Reed completed 7 of 21 passes (33.3%) for 101 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and three carries for six yards. Running back Lorenzo Lingard had 16 carries for 56 yards and one rushing touchdown.

Wide receiver Curtis Hodges made two catches for 39 yards and one touchdown, while Tyler Vaughns made one catch for 36 yards and one touchdown. The defense made 68 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Next week is the UFL regular-season finale. The Dallas Renegades visit the St. Louis Battlehawks on Friday at 8 pm on Fox, while the Louisville Kings visit the Columbus Aviators on Sunday at 6 pm on Fox.
