The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (20-24) and the Rochester Red Wings (24-20) played game five on Saturday night from ESL Ballpark. Bryse Wilson was on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Riley Cornelio of Rochester.
In the bottom of the first inning, Rochester had a runner on third base when Andrés Chaparro hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Christian Franklin for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Wilson struck out Abimelec Ortiz to retire the side.
Moving to the bottom of the sixth inning, Lehigh Valley starter Bryse Wilson gave up back-to-back singles to Harry Ford and Yohandy Morales. Rochester first baseman Andrés Chaparro followed up by hitting Wilson’s sinker for a three-run home run at 402 feet to center field for a 4-0 lead. It was Chaparro’s sixth home run of the season, and the exit velocity off the bat was 103 mph.
Bryse Wilson’s night was done. He pitched 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs, and five strikeouts, throwing 84 pitches, of which 54 were strikes. Daniel Harper replaced Wilson with one out. He allowed a hit and struck out one, throwing 14 pitches, of which eight were strikes, to get the last two outs.
Max Lazar was the new pitcher for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lazar allowed a hit and struck out one, throwing 17 pitches, of which 10 were strikes, to get three outs.
Nolan Hoffman pitched for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the eighth inning. Rochester had runners on the corners when Andrew Pinckney grounded into a forceout at second base. Andrés Chaparro scored for a 5-0 lead. A flyout by Andrés Chaparro ended the inning. Hoffman allowed two hits and one run, throwing 14 pitches, of which 11 were strikes, to get three outs.
Lehigh Valley had no answers in the game and were shut out by the Red Wings 5-0. With the loss, Lehigh Valley will lose the series. It was also the second shutout in this series.
They finished the night with four hits, went 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position, and left eight men on base. The loss went to Lehigh Valley starter Bryse Wilson (2-5), and the win went to Rochester starter Riley Cornelio (5-1).
The IronPigs and Red Wings conclude the six-game series on Sunday at 1:05 pm on the MLB App. Chuck King (1-3, 5.81 ERA) will be on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Luis Perales (1-4, 3.82 ERA) of Rochester.
