Juan Sierra drives in two runs to lead Fayetteville to victory in Delmarva

The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (14-21) and the Delmarva Shorebirds (14-21) played game two on Wednesday night from Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Nick Potter was on the mound for Fayetteville against Esteban Mejia of Delmarva.

In the bottom of the third inning, Delmarva had a runner on third base when Nick Potter threw a wild pitch, scoring Stiven Martinez for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Stiven Martinez was caught stealing second base, and the inning was over.

At the top of the fourth inning, Fayetteville left fielder Juan Sierra hit a two-run home run to left field for a 2-1 lead. Arturo Flores and Hector Salas worked four-pitch walks before Yosweld Vasquez hit an RBI single to Mejia. A throwing error by Mejia allowed Flores to score for a 3-1 lead. With runners on first and second base, and two outs, Huezo struck out on a wild pitch, but made it to first base, and Yosweld Vasquez scored for a 4-1 lead. Xavier Neyens was called out on strikes, and the inning was over.

Nick Potter pitched four innings, allowing one hit, one run, three walks, and five strikeouts, throwing 57 pitches, of which 31 were strikes. Kellan Oakes was the new pitcher for Fayetteville in the bottom of the fifth inning.

At the top of the sixth inning, Fayetteville had a runner on third base when Hector Salas hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Arturo Flores for a 5-1 lead. With two outs, a groundout by Anthony Huezo ended the inning.

Fayetteville pitcher Kellan Oakes pitched five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and six strikeouts, throwing 60 pitches, of which 40 were strikes, to help the Woodpeckers beat the Shorebirds 5-1.

Fayetteville finished the night with five hits, went 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position, and left seven men on base. Juan Sierra went 1 for 3 with a home run, a walk, a stolen base, and two RBIs. The win went to Fayetteville pitcher Kellan Oakes (3-1), and the loss went to Delmarva starter Esteban Mejia (0-3).

The Woodpeckers and Shorebirds play game three on Thursday at 7:05 pm on the MLB App. Javier Perez (2-2, 2.73 ERA) will be on the mound for Fayetteville against Christian Rodriguez (2-2, 3.51 ERA) of Delmarva.
