The Orlando Storm (5-2) visited Shell Energy Stadium on Sunday afternoon against the Houston Gamblers (2-5).
In the first quarter, Houston kicker John Hoyland missed a 60-yard field goal. Orlando got the ball on the 42-yard line. On the third play, Orlando quarterback Jack Plummer threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Elijhah Badger for a 7-0 lead. The drive took three plays for 50 yards. Late in the first quarter, Houston kicker John Hoyland made a 23-yard field goal. The Gamblers trailed the Storm 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Houston had the ball on the 15-yard line. Quarterback Hunter Dekkers’ pass was picked off by Orlando defensive back D.J. James for a pick-six 18-yard touchdown for a 14-3 lead.
Houston bounced back. Quarterback Hunter Dekkers threw a short pass to JaVonta Payton for 20 yards. The Gamblers moved the ball to the six-yard line, where Hunter Dekkers scrambled into the endzone. The Gamblers trailed the Storm 14-10, and the drive took six plays for 44 yards.
For the rest of the second quarter, the two teams exchanged field goals. Orlando kicker Michael Lantz made a 41-yard field goal, and Houston kicker John Hoyland made a 29-yard field goal. The Storm led the Gamblers 17-13 at halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, the Gamblers made a quarterback change with John Rhys Plumlee in for Dekkers. Plumlee ran for 14 yards, leading the offense to the five-yard line. On the next play, Plumlee threw a touchdown pass to Jalen White. The Gamblers took a 20-17 lead to conclude a six-play drive for 59 yards.
On the final play of the third quarter, Orlando quarterback Jack Plummer threw a short pass to K.J. Hamler for 11 yards to the 31-yard line. The Storm trailed the Gamblers 20-17, heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Orlando quarterback Jack Plummer threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Elijhah Badger. The Storm took a 24-20 lead with 14:53 left. The drive took eight plays for 64 yards. Houston returner Lawrence Keys III returned the kickoff for 64 yards to the 31-yard line. Houston moved the ball to the 13-yard line, where kicker John Hoyland made a 31-yard field goal. The Gamblers trailed the Storm 24-23 with 12:12 left.
Late in the game, Houston’s offense moved the ball to the 45-yard line. Kicker John Hoyland attempted a 63-yard field goal. It was no good, and the Orlando Storm snapped a two-game losing streak over the Houston Gamblers by the final score of 24-23.
Orlando’s offense had 185 yards (152 passing yards, 55 rushing yards), 11 first downs, 0 for 1 in the redzone, and the team was penalized seven times. Quarterback Jack Plummer completed 14 of 24 passes (58.3%) for 152 yards, two touchdowns, and one carry for -1 yard. Running back Jashaun Corbin had seven carries for 25 yards.
Wide receiver Elijhah Badger made four catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns, while Cam Camper made two catches for 28 yards. The defense made 60 tackles, two tackles for loss, one interception, five pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Houston’s offense had 415 yards (317 passing yards, 98 rushing yards), 22 first downs, 1 for 5 in the redzone, and the team was penalized six times. Quarterback Hunter Dekkers completed 24 of 41 passes (58.5%) for 268 yards, one interception, four carries for 17 yards, and one rushing touchdown, while John Rhys Plumlee completed 1 of 3 passes (33.3%) for 49 yards, and two carries for 12 yards. Running back Marcus Major had six carries for 32 yards.
Wide receiver Jalen Moreno-Cropper made six catches for 68 yards, while Jalen White made three catches for 68 yards and one touchdown. The defense made 41 tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, and one pass breakup.
Next Friday, the Orlando Storm visit the Dallas Renegades at 8 pm on Fox, while the Houston Gamblers visit the St. Louis Battlehawks on Saturday at 3 pm on ABC.
