The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (10-13) played game two against the Charleston RiverDogs (13-10) on Wednesday night from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark. Nick Potter was on the mound for Fayetteville against Dominic Fritton of Charleston.
At the top of the second inning, Fayetteville second baseman Nick Monistere hit an RBI single to left field, and later stole second base. Two batters later, Josh Wakefield hit an RBI single to left field. Monistere scored for a 1-0 lead. With one out, Arturo Flores grounded out, and German Ramirez struck out swinging to end the inning.
At the top of the third inning, Fayetteville had a runner on first base when third baseman Xavier Neyens hit an RBI double to left field. Zach Cole scored for a 2-0 lead. It was Neyens’s second double of the season. With two outs, Anthony Huezo was called out on strikes.
Moving to the top of the fourth inning, Fayetteville had runners on first and second base when German Ramirez hit an RBI single to center field. Josh Wakefield scored for a 3-0 lead. With two outs, right fielder Zach Cole hit a two-run RBI double to right field. Arturo Flores and German Ramirez scored for a 5-0 lead. It was Cole’s first double of the season. A flyout by Xavier Neyens ended the inning.
Fayetteville starter Nick Potter pitched three innings, allowing one hit, three walks, and three strikeouts, throwing 51 pitches, of which 29 were strikes. Kellan Oakes was the new pitcher for Fayetteville in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Moving to the bottom of the seventh inning, Charleston had a runner on third base when catcher Caden Bodine hit an RBI ground ball to left field. Jose Monzon scored to cut the deficit to 5-1. A groundout by Cooper Flemming ended the inning.
Kellan Oakes pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five hits, one run, one walk, and six strikeouts, throwing 73 pitches, of which 50 were strikes. Leomar Rosario replaced Oakes in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs. Charleston second baseman Alberth Palma hit a single to center field. Nicandro Aybar tried to score but was called out, and the inning was over.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Rosario struck out the side, and the game was over. The Woodpeckers defeated the RiverDogs 5-1. Rosario pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and three strikeouts, throwing 25 pitches, of which 15 were strikes.
Fayetteville finished the night with five hits, went 3 for 10 with runners in scoring position, and left four men on base. Zach Cole went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs. The win went to Fayetteville pitcher Kellan Oakes (4-2), and the loss went to Charleston pitcher Dominic Fritton (0-2).
The Woodpeckers and RiverDogs play game three on Thursday at 7:05 pm on the MLB App. Fayetteville has yet to name a starter, while Ethan Storm (1-1, 5.00 ERA) will be on the mound for Charleston.
