Anthony Huezo drives in three runs as Fayetteville drops series finale in Augusta

The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (3-12) concluded a six-game series against the Augusta GreenJackets (9-6) on Sunday afternoon from SRP Park. Luis Aguilar was on the mound for Fayetteville against Davis Polo of Augusta.

At the top of the first inning, Fayetteville had a runner on first base with two outs when right fielder Anthony Huezo hit an RBI double to right field. Xavier Neyens scored for a 1-0 lead. A groundout by Juan Sierra ended the inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Augusta had runners on second and third base with two outs when Fayetteville starter Luis Aguilar threw a wild pitch. Luis Guanipa scored, and the game was tied 1-1. A flyout by Juan Mateo ended the inning.

Moving to the bottom of the third inning, Augusta had a runner on first base with one out when left fielder Dalton McIntyre hit a two-run home run to right field to give the GreenJackets a 3-1 lead. Center fielder Luis Guanipa followed up with a solo home run to left field for a 4-1 lead. A flyout by Tanner Smith and a groundout by Juan Mateo ended the inning.

That was it for Luis Aguilar. He pitched three innings, allowing five hits, four runs, one walk, and three strikeouts, throwing 56 pitches, of which 32 were strikes. Aubrey Smith was the new pitcher for Fayetteville in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Two batters in, Smith walked Joe Olsavsky. A wild pitch by Smith, a passed ball by catcher Yosweld Vasquez, and a missed catch error by Camilo Diaz allowed Olsavsky to score for a 5-1 lead. A flyout by Dalton McIntyre ended the inning.

At the top of the fifth inning, Fayetteville catcher Yosweld Vasquez, while Carlos Cauro and Brandon Forrester worked four-pitch walks that loaded the bases. A wild pitch by Cristobal Abreu scored Vasquez, and the Woodpeckers trailed the GreenJackets 5-2. With the bases still loaded, Fayetteville could not get anyone home as Xavier Neyens, Camilo Diaz, and Anthony Huezo all struck out swinging.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Augusta center fielder Luis Guanipa hit a double to left field. Guanipa stole third base and scored on a fielding error by shortstop Camilo Diaz for a 6-2 lead. With two outs, Augusta right fielder Junior Garcia hit a solo home run to right field for a 7-2 lead.

It was Garcia’s first home run of the season. Two batters later, Smith struck out Dallas Macias to end the inning. Aubrey Smith pitched two innings, allowing three hits, three runs, three walks, and three strikeouts, throwing 55 pitches, of which 29 were strikes.

At the top of the sixth inning, Fayetteville had runners on first and second base when Brandon Forrester and RBI single to right field. German Ramirez scored, and the Woodpeckers trailed the GreenJackets 7-3. Forrester was caught stealing second base, and the inning was over.

Jackson Wells was the new pitcher for Fayetteville in the bottom of the sixth inning. Augusta second baseman Yamvier Carrero began the inning by hitting a single to right field. He would later steal second and third base. A throwing error by catcher Carlos Cauro allowed Carrero to score for an 8-3 lead. With two outs, a groundout by Tanner Smith ended the inning.

At the top of the seventh inning, Fayetteville had a runner on first base when right fielder Anthony Huezo hit a two-run home run to center field. The Woodpeckers cut the deficit to 8-5. It was Huezo’s second home run of the season. With two outs, a flyout by German Ramirez ended the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Augusta would get one of the runs back when Joe Olsavsky hit an RBI double to center field. Juan Mateo scored for a 9-5 lead. Wells would load the bases, and the GreenJackets continued to pounce on the Woodpeckers.

Dalton McIntyre cleared the base with a three-run RBI single to center field. Junior Garcia, Joe Olsavsky, and Yamvier Carrero scored for a 12-5 lead. With two outs, a flyout by Luis Guanipa ended the inning. Jackson Wells pitched two innings, allowing six hits, five runs, one walk, and two strikeouts, throwing 55 pitches, of which 29 were strikes.

Leomar Rosario was the new pitcher for Fayetteville in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out and a runner on first base, Augusta first baseman Joe Olsavsky grounded into a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play. Rosario allowed one hit and walked one, throwing 15 pitches, of which eight were strikes.

At the top of the ninth inning, Fayetteville’s bats went quiet, and the Woodpeckers lost to the August GreenJackets by the final score of 12-5. They lose the series 5-1. Fayetteville finished the afternoon with seven hits, committed four errors, went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position, and left eight men on base. Right fielder Anthony Huezo went 2 for 5 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs.

The loss went to Fayetteville starter Luis Aguilar (1-1), and the win went to Augusta pitcher Mathieu Curtis (1-1), and Kendy Richard earned the save.

The Woodpeckers return to Segra Stadium to begin a six-game series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, beginning on Tuesday at 6:05 pm on the MLB App.
