Lehigh Valley drops second consecutive game at St. Paul

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (10-8) and the St. Paul Saints (7-10) played game three on Thursday night from CHS Field. Alan Rangel was on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Connor Prielipp of St. Paul.

The game was scoreless for two and a half innings until the bottom of the third inning. St. Paul had a runner on third base when right fielder Alan Roden hit a ground ball RBI single to right field. Aaron Sabato scored for a 1-0 lead.

With two outs, Rangel walked Emmanuel Rodriguez to load the bases. Second baseman Orlando Arcia hit an RBI single to third baseman Carter Kieboom. Arcia beat the throw at first base, and Alan Roden scored for a 2-0 lead. A lineout by Alex Jackson ended the inning. Alan Rangel pitched five innings, allowing two runs, four walks, and five strikeouts, throwing 89 pitches, of which 52 were strikes.

At the top of the fourth inning, Lehigh Valley center fielder Steward Berroa hit a solo home run to left field. The IronPigs trailed the Saints 2-1. It was Berroa’s second home run of the season.

Colin Peluse was the new pitcher for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the sixth inning. St. Paul had runners on first and second base when shortstop Kaelen Culpepper hit an RBI double to right field. Tanner Schobel scored for a 3-1 lead.

Next, right fielder Alan Roden hit a ground ball that went off the glove of Carter Kieboom, and Aaron Sabato scored for a 4-1 lead. A lineout by Gabriel Gonzalez ended the inning. Peluse allowed four hits, two runs, and one strikeout, throwing 26 pitches, of which 18 were strikes.

John McMillon was the new pitcher for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the seventh inning. St. Paul had runners on first and second base with two outs when Aaron Sabato hit an RBI single to left field. Alex Jackson scored, Tanner Schobel was caught trying to reach third base, and the inning was over. The IronPigs trailed the Saints 5-1. McMillon allowed a hit, a run, and one walk, throwing 19 pitches, of which nine were strikes.

Génesis Cabrera was the new pitcher for Lehigh Valley in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cabrera allowed a hit and threw seven pitches, of which five were strikes, to get three outs.

Lehigh Valley’s bats went quiet at the top of the ninth inning as they lost to the Saints by the final score of 5-1. It is Lehigh Valley’s second straight loss. Lehigh Valley finished the night with seven hits, committed one error, went 0 for 2 with runners in scoring position, and left six men on base.

Lehigh Valley center fielder Steward Berroa went 2 for 4 with a single, a home run, and one RBI. The loss went to Lehigh Valley starter Alan Rangel (2-1), and the win went to St. Paul starter Connor Prielipp (1-0).

The IronPigs and Saints play game four on Friday at 7:37 pm on the MLB App. Connor Gillispie (3-0, 0.00 ERA) will be on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Zebby Matthews (0-2, 8.76 ERA) of St. Paul.
