
The Memphis Showboats (2-6) visited the Alamodome on Friday night to take on the San Antonio Brahmas (1-7) in a battle of two last-place teams. Both teams have already been eliminated from playoff contention and are now using these games to audition for next season.
In the first quarter, San Antonio quarterback Kevin Hogan’s pass was intercepted by Cameron Dantzler for a 42-yard pick-six touchdown. Quarterback Troy Williams completed the two-point conversion to Jonathan Adams for an 8-0 lead with 9:18 left. The Showboats led 8-0 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, Memphis kicker Matt Coughlin made a 36-yard field goal to extend its lead to 11-0 with 14:15 left. Later in the second quarter, San Antonio ran a trick play when Kevin Hogan threw the ball to Steven Stilianos, who then threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Dee Anderson. San Antonio were unable to get the one-point conversion and it was now 11-6 Memphis with 3:52 left.
Twenty seconds later, Memphis running back Jalen Jackson rushed to his left side for a 12-yard touchdown. Memphis did not get the two-point conversion and led San Antonio 17-6 with 3:17 left. With under a minute remaining, San Antonio quarterback Kevin Hogan handed the ball off to Jashaun Corbin for a two-yard touchdown. Then, Hogan successfully threw the ball to Jashaun Corbin for the two-point conversion. Memphis led San Antonio 17-14 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Memphis kicker Matt Coughlin made his second field goal of the night for 36 yards making it 20-14 Showboats with 12:28 left. Those were the only points scored in the third quarter and Memphis led 20-14 with one quarter left to play.
In the fourth quarter, San Antonio kicker Tristan Vizcaino made a 45-yard field goal and a 33-yard field goal to tie the game 20-20 with 29 seconds left. Vizcaino had missed a field goal early in the fourth quarter. Had he made it, San Antonio would’ve won. Instead, the game went to overtime tied 20-20.
In overtime, Memphis quarterback Troy Williams threw the ball to Daewood Davis for two points. It was now 22-20 for Memphis. After San Antonio missed the two points, Memphis quarterback Troy Williams threw the ball to Kai Locksley for another successful two points for a 24-20 lead.
San Antonio quarterback Kevin Hogan threw a successful pass to Jontre Kirklin for two points and it was now 24-22. San Antonio’s defense stopped Memphis, giving the Brahmas one more chance to tie the game. They did not get the two-point conversion and the Memphis Showboats defeated the San Antonio Brahmas by the final score of 24-22. It was Memphis’s second overtime win of the season.
Memphis had 167 yards of offense led by quarterback Troy Williams completing 5 of 11 passes (45.5%) for 36 yards, and six carries for 29 yards. Running back Jalen Jackson led the rushers with seven carries for 76 yards, and one touchdown.
Tight end Jay Jay Wilson led the receivers making one catch for 14 yards. Kicker Matt Coughlin made two field goals with a long of 36 yards. The defense made 71 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, one touchdown, and six pass breakups.
San Antonio had 285 yards of offense led by quarterback Kevin Hogan completing 14 of 25 passes (56%) for 90 yards, and five carries for 12 yards. Running back Jashaun Corbin led the rushers with 25 carries for 143 yards, and one touchdown.
Wide receiver Dee Anderson led the receivers making one catch for 38 yards, and one touchdown. Kicker Tristan Vizcaino made 2 of 3 field goals (66.7%) with a long of 45 yards. The defense made 47 tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, one interception, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
