Edmonton Elks sign eight players including four draft picks

The Edmonton Elks signed draft picks wide receiver Kolby Hurford, offensive linemen Domenico Piazza and Daniel Hocevar, and defensive lineman Silas Hubert on Monday.

They also signed running backs Jonathan Rosery and DeWayne McBride, wide receiver Jackson Tachinski, and defensive back Romeo Nash on Monday. The Elks also released offensive lineman Tomas Jack-Kurdyla.

Kolby Hurford is six foot one and weighs 183 pounds. The 23-year-old from Redwater, Alberta, was drafted by the Edmonton Elks in the seventh round (58th pick) of the 2025 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Hurford played four seasons at the University of Alberta (2021-24) making 74 catches for 1,254 yards, 12 touchdowns, two carries for six yards, one kick return for one yard, nine punt returns for 131 yards, and one tackle (1 solo) in 29 games for the Golden Bears.

Domenico Piazza is six foot two and weighs 298 pounds. The 24-year-old from Mercier, Quebec, was drafted by the Edmonton Elks in the fifth round (40th pick) of the 2025 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Piazza played five seasons at McGill University (2021-24) playing 32 games for the Redbirds. In 2024, McGill averaged 19 points per game, 144.9 rushing yards per game, 249.44 passing yards per game, 359 total yards per game, 18 touchdowns, and allowed 51 sacks finishing 3-6 for the season. He was named Second Team U-Sports All-Canadian.

Daniel Hocevar is six foot two and weighs 297 pounds. The 24-year-old from Hamilton, Ontario, was drafted by the Edmonton Elks in the sixth round (49th pick) of the 2025 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Hocevar played four seasons at the University of Guelph (2021-24) playing 40 games for the Gryphons. In 2024, Guelph averaged 31.10 points per game, 207.1 rushing yards per game, 261.80 passing yards per game, 449.4 total yards per game, 36 touchdowns, and allowed 30 sacks finishing 7-3 for the season.

Silas Hubert is six foot five and weighs 265 pounds. The 23-year-old from Norwood, Ontario, was drafted by the Edmonton Elks in the fourth round (31st pick) of the 2025 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Hubert played four seasons at Queen’s University (2021-24) making 85 tackles (47 solos, 38 assists), 27 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and one touchdown in 33 games for the Gaels.

Jonathan Rosery is five foot nine and weighs 193 pounds. The 24-year-old from Edmonton, Alberta, had eight carries for 18 yards, and three catches for 30 yards in two preseason games. The Blue Bombers released him on June 2, 2024.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers drafted Rosery in the seventh round (62nd pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft. Rosery attended training camp and was placed on the suspended list as he returned to Alberta for his final collegiate season. The Blue Bombers re-signed him on November 28, 2023.

Rosery played four seasons at the University of Alberta (2019, 2021-23) with 139 carries for 748 yards, one touchdown, 114 catches for 1,710 yards, 10 touchdowns, and ten kick returns for 211 yards in 29 games. He was named a Canada West All-Star in 2022 with 36 carries for 160 yards, 29 catches for 536 yards, and two touchdowns in six games for the Golden Bears.

DeWayne McBride is five foot ten and weighs 209 pounds. The 23-year-old from Starke, Florida, signed with the Memphis Showboats on January 6, 2025. He attended training camp and was released on March 20, 2025.

The Minnesota Vikings drafted McBride in the seventh round (222nd pick) of the 2023 NFL Draft. In 2023, McBride had 20 carries for 70 yards, two touchdowns, one catch for 11 yards, and three kick returns for 50 yards in three preseason games. He spent the 2023 season on the practice squad.

In 2024, McBride had 20 carries for 68 yards, two catches for 27 yards, and one kick return for 26 yards in three preseason games. The Vikings released him on August 29, 2024.

Collegiately, McBride played three seasons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2020-22) with 430 carries for 3,148 yards, 32 touchdowns, and four catches for 22 yards in 21 games for the Blazers. He was named First Team All-C-USA and the Conference-USA Offensive Player of the Year in 2022.

Jackson Tachinski is six foot four and weighs 215 pounds. The 23-year-old from Winnipeg, Manitoba, played five seasons as a quarterback at the University of Manitoba (2019, 2021-24) completing 349 of 578 passes (60%) for 4,553 yards, 28 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, 220 carries for 1,519 yards, 21 touchdowns, and two tackles (2 solos) in 35 games for the Bisons. He was named Canada West Player of the Year and Manitoba Bisons Athlete of the Year in 2024.

Romeo Nash is six foot and weighs 195 pounds. The 23-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, played four seasons at the University of Alberta (2021-24) making 64 tackles (56 solos, 8 assists), one tackle for loss, four interceptions for 52 yards, one touchdown, 15 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one punt return for 14 yards in 26 games for the Golden Bears.

Tomas Jack-Kurdyla is six foot four and weighs 300 pounds. The 29-year-old from Montreal, Quebec, re-signed with the Edmonton Elks on January 24, 2024. In 2024, Jack-Kurdyla played three games after dealing with a knee injury for the majority of the season.

Edmonton’s offense averaged 28 points per game, 390.3 net offense per game, 131.4 rushing yards per game, 271.7 passing yards per game, and 29 sacks allowed finishing 7-11 in the 2024 season.

The Edmonton Elks drafted Jack-Kurdyla in the first round (4th pick) of the 2020 CFL Draft. In three seasons with Edmonton, Jack-Kurdyla has played 42 games, of which 36 were starts.

In 2023, Jack-Kurdyla started in all 18 games for the Elks in 2023. In 2023, Edmonton’s offense ranked last in points per game (20.4), fifth in touchdowns (41), seventh in average total yards (324.9), third in average rushing yards (123.6), eighth in average passing yards (221.1), and fifth in sacks allowed (52).

Collegiately, Jack-Kurdyla played four seasons at the University of Buffalo (2016-19) playing 48 games at right guard with one tackle (1 solo) for the Bulls. In 2019, the Bulls’ offense rushed for a school-record 3,256 yards and allowed a program-low eight sacks.
