Reading Royals can’t hang on to the lead against Maine

The Reading Royals (14-16-1-1) continued their three-game series on Saturday night from Santander Arena against the Maine Mariners (13-14-5).

At 6:27 of the first period, Reading’s Shane Sellar put the Royals up 1-0 with assists by Jake Bricknell and Blake Evennou. Three minutes six seconds later, Reading’s Jake Bricknell extended the Royals lead to 2-0 with assists by Kenny Johnson and Adam Brubacher.

Three minutes later, Reading’s Devon Paliani made it 3-0 Royals with assists by Kenny Johnson and Adam Brubacher. At 14:48, Maine’s Curtis Hall scored to cut the Royals lead down to 3-1 with assists by Cameron Askew and Gabriel Chicoine. The Royals had ten shots on goal and led 3-1 after one period of play.

Seven minutes and fifty-four seconds into the second period, Maine’s William Provost scored which made it 3-2 with assists by Cameron Askew and Gabriel Chicoine. The Royals had 12 shots on goal and led 3-2 after two periods of play.

In the third period, Maine scored three goals in six minutes by Chase Zieky, Darien Kielb, and Tyler Drevitch put the Mariners up 5-3. At 8:32, Reading’s Brayden Guy scored to cut the Mariners lead down to 5-4 with assists by Adam Brubacher and Kenny Johnson.

With 54 seconds left of the game, Maine’s Alex Kile put the game away with an empty net goal for a 6-4 lead with an assist by Gabriel Chicoine. The Royals had 13 shots on goal and lost to the Mariners by the final score of 6-4.

The Royals had 35 shots on goal, committed three penalties for six minutes, went 0 for 1 on the power play, and Parker Gahagen made 32 saves off 37 shots.
