The Ottawa Redblacks announced on Monday they re-signed defensive back Justin Howell and defensive lineman Nigel Romick to one-year contract extensions through the 2023 season.
Justin Howell, a 29-year-old from Bradford, Ontario, had 16 tackles, and two forced fumbles in five games for Ottawa this season. The Redblacks selected him in the seventh round (55th pick) in the 2018 CFL Draft. This will be Howell’s fifth season in Ottawa. In four seasons, Howell has 87 tackles, one sack, and four forced fumbles in 45 games.
Collegiately, Howell played four seasons at Carleton University (2014-17) with 86 tackles, two fumble recoveries, one interception, and six pass breakups in 23 games.
Nigel Romick, a 31-year-old from Thunder Bay, Ontario, had eight tackles in nine games during the 2022 season. This will be his eighth season in Ottawa. The Redblacks drafted Romick in the third round (23rd pick) in the 2014 CFL Draft out of St. Mary’s University.
In seven seasons in Ottawa, Romick has 114 tackles, and one sack in 100 games. He helped the Redblacks win the 2016 Grey Cup championship.
Collegiately, Romick played three seasons with the Huskies (2011-13) with 62.5 tackles, nine sacks, and one forced fumble in 24 games.
