Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints trade draft picks

Philadelphia Eagles

On Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles traded their two first-round picks (16 and 19), plus a 2022 third-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for a first-round pick (18), a third-round pick (101), a seventh-round pick (237), a 2023 first-round pick, and 2024 second-round pick.

In three weeks, the Eagles have ten draft picks heading into this month’s NFL Draft in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Why did the Eagles make this trade?

Simple, the New Orleans Saints have the eighth toughest schedule heading into the 2022 season. The Eagles are banking on the Saints to have a terrible season and, as a result, will have a top-ten pick heading into the 2023 Draft.

The Eagles will now have two first-round picks this year, and two first-round picks next year, with one of them possibly becoming a top-ten pick, depending on how the Saints do this year.

Howie Roseman has been the Eagles’ GM since 2010. He has made some good trades as a GM, like trading Carson Wentz to the Colts.

In the trade, if Wentz played under 75% of snaps, the Eagles would get a second-round pick. However, if Wentz played 75% of snaps during the 2021 season, the Eagles got a first-round selection. As a result, the Eagles got the Colts’ first-round pick, and Wentz was traded to the Washington Commanders.

Roseman has done a poor job drafting players. As a result, he has missed on several players over the years that have gone on to be up-and-coming stars like Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Because of this, the Eagles have to pay big money for free agents.

The 2022 Draft is loaded with defensive players like Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux and Michigan’s David Ojabo that the Eagles could use. They also need to upgrade at safety, linebacker, and rebuild the defensive and offensive lines. Many of these rookies will be available in the later rounds. However, are the Eagles willing to draft them? We’ll find out later this month.
