Calgary Stampeders re-sign backup QB Jake Maier

On Friday, the Calgary Stampeders re-signed backup quarterback Jake Maier to a one-year extension for the 2022 season.

Jake Maier took over the quarterback job after Bo Levi Mitchell was injured in Week 2. Maier played eleven games with 95 completions for 1,211 yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions, and 16 carries for 31 yards and two touchdowns.

On bringing Maier back, Stampeders President and General Manager John Hufnagel said, “Jake showed great promise during his rookie season and made a remarkably rapid adjustment to the Canadian game. I look forward to seeing him continue his development next season.”

Before joining the Stampeders, Maier played college football at Long Beach City College (2016) and UC Davis (2017-19). At Long Beach State, Maier played 11 games with 268 completions for 3,689 yards, 38 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and 68 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

Maier played 36 games for the Aggies with 992 completions for 11,163 yards, 88 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions, earning him the conference’s offensive player of the year and first-team quarterback.

Jake Maier commented on returning to the Stampeders said, “I am very thankful to be given the opportunity to continue my career as a Calgary Stampeder. It was important for my family and I to surround ourselves with a high-class organization and a supportive fan base. I look forward to playing an important role in the growth of our team with the end goal of a championship.”
