The NASCAR Cup Series visited World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway on Sunday afternoon in the Enjoy Illinois 300. Joey Logano started the race on the pole, with Kyle Larson starting second.
Joey Logano led the open 45 laps to win the first stage. During the first stage, there were four cautions, including on lap 29 when Ty Dillon made contact with Shane van Gisbergen. Gisbergen’s day was not done. In the second stage, Riley Herbst cut off Gisbergen’s bumper after Chris Buscher checked up following contact with Carson Hocevar in front of him, spinning A.J. Allmendinger.
On lap 81, Kyle Larson passed Ross Chastain for the lead. Late in the second stage, Zane Smith hit the Turn 1 outside safer barrier with 10 laps in the second stage. The second stage came to an abrupt end, which was won by Kyle Larson.
In the final stage, Bubba Wallace, Chase Briscoe, and William Byron were involved in a four-wide accident. Later, Ryan Blaney went out on lap 155 due to a brake rotor failure on the frontstretch. On lap 167, Brad Keselowski took the lead. Three laps later, Ross Chastain made contact with Chase Briscoe to bring out the caution.
Late in the race, Kyle Larson was leading when Chase Elliott had brake rotor failure and collided with Chase Briscoe to send the race to overtime. In overtime, Shane van Gisbergen spun attempting to make a pass at Turn 1. Kyle Larson led 80 of 247 laps, holding off Alex Bowman to end a 51-race winless streak by .333 seconds. It was his 33rd career Cup Series win.
Joey Logano, William Byron, and Ross Chastain rounded out the top five. Austin Dillon, Connor Zilisch, Carson Hocevar, Denny Hamlin, and Austin Cindric completed the top ten. Logano led a race-high 96 of 247 laps. Click here to view the full results.
