Edmonton Elks sign WR Montrell Washington, place WR O.J. Hiliare on suspended list

The Edmonton Elks signed wide receiver Montrell Washington, and placed wide receiver O.J. Hiliare on the suspended list on Thursday.

Montrell Washington is five foot nine and weighs 181 pounds. The 27-year-old from Canton, Georgia, was drafted by the D.C. Defenders in the 2026 UFL Draft. He attended training camp before being released on March 19, 2026. The Houston Texans signed Washington on August 5, 2026. They released him on August 12, 2026.

The Denver Broncos drafted Washington in the fifth round (162nd pick) of the 2022 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Giants. He made 15 catches for 214 yards, three carries for 10 yards, six kick returns for 170 yards, eight punt returns for 108 yards, and one tackle (1 solo) in 12 preseason games. He also appeared in 15 regular-season games for the Broncos in 2022 with five catches for 30 yards.

Collegiately, Washington spent four seasons at Samford University (2018-21) with 129 catches for 1,686 yards, 16 touchdowns, 79 carries for 427 yards, eight rushing touchdowns, completed one pass for 16 yards, 46 kick returns for 1,046 yards, one touchdown, 47 punt returns for 746 yards, four touchdowns, and five tackles (4 solos, 1 assists) in 38 games for the Bulldogs. He was named First Team All-SoCon in 2021, First Team All-American by STATS in 2019, Second Team All-SoCon in 2019, and SoCon All-Freshman Team in 2017.

O.J. Hiliare is six foot and weighs 185 pounds. The 25-year-old from Belle Glade, Florida, signed with the Edmonton Elks on August 19, 2025. In 2025, he made 32 catches for 400 yards and one tackle in eight games. In 2026, he made one catch for 10 yards in one preseason game. He was placed on the practice squad.

The Atlanta Falcons signed Hiliare as an undrafted free agent on May 22, 2024. He made two catches for 32 yards and one kick return for 25 yards in three preseason games. The Falcons released him on August 27, 2024. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats signed Hiliare on September 17, 2024, and spent the season on the practice squad. The Ticats released him on October 26, 2024.

Hiliare re-signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on January 14, 2025. In 2025, he made two catches for 26 yards in two preseason games. The Ticats released him on May 31, 2025.

Collegiately, Hiliare played three seasons at Alabama A&M (2019-21) with 102 catches for 1,365 yards, 13 touchdowns, two carries for six yards, completing one pass for 48 yards, one touchdown, 17 kick returns for 327 yards, 16 punt returns for 141 yards, and one tackle (1 solo) in 24 games for the Bulldogs.

Then, Hiliare transferred to Bowling Green (2022-23) with 103 catches for 1,279 yards, 10 touchdowns, seven carries for 17 yards, and three kick returns for 50 yards in 26 games for the Falcons.
