The Ottawa Redblacks added quarterback Sam Hartman to the negotiation list on Monday, according to the CFL Negotiation List page. Hartman is currently signed to the Washington Commanders’ practice squad.
Sam Hartman is six foot one and weighs 209 pounds. The 27-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, signed with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2024. Hartman is currently in his third season in Washington, completing 33 of 59 passes (56%) for 290 yards, 0 touchdowns, four interceptions, and eight carries for 55 yards in four preseason games.
Collegiately, Hartman spent five seasons at Wake Forest (2018-22), completing 944 of 1,597 passes (59.1 %) for 12,967 yards, 110 touchdowns, 41 interceptions, 416 carries for 855 yards, 17 rushing touchdowns, one catch for three yards, and two tackles (2 solos) in 48 games for the Demon Deacons.
He was named Third Team All-ACC in 2022, Second Team All-ACC in 2021, and won the Brian Piccolo Award, given annually since 1970 in memory of the late Brian Piccolo to the “most courageous” football player in the ACC. In his final season, Hartman led Wake Forest to win the Gasparilla Bowl in 2022 and the Gator Bowl in 2021, earning MVP honors, and became the first player in school history to win two bowl MVP honors.
Then, he transferred to Notre Dame in 2023, completing 191 of 301 passes (63.5 %) for 2, 689 yards, 24 touchdowns, eight interceptions, 45 carries for 123 yards, and three rushing touchdowns in 12 games for the Fighting Irish. He was a team captain and was named Notre Dame’s Most Valuable Player.
