The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (71-53, 39-20) concluded the seven-game homestand on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader against the Salem RidgeYaks (52-73, 27-33) at Segra Stadium. In game one, Charlie Weber was on the mound for Fayetteville against Jose Bello of Salem.
In the bottom of the second inning, Fayetteville had runners on the corners with two outs when German Ramirez hit an RBI double to center field, scoring Aaron Piasecki for a 1-0 lead. Fayetteville would get the bases loaded before Logan Hughes worked a four-pitch walk, bringing home Arturo Flores for a 2-0 lead. With two outs, Waner Luciano popped out to catcher Kleyver Salazar for the third out.
Moving to the top of the fourth inning, Salem had runners on second and third base when Avinson Pinto tied the game 2-2 with a two-run RBI double to right field, scoring Kleyver Salazar and Starlyn Nunez. Three batters later with two outs, Martin Shelar put the RidgeYaks up 4-2 with a two-run RBI double to center field, scoring Avinson Pinto and D’Angelo Ortiz. Charlie Weber picked off Shelar at second base to end the inning.
The Woodpeckers battled back in the bottom of the fourth inning. They would get the bases loaded when Logan Hughes hit a grand slam to right field for a 6-4 lead. It was his fourth home run of the season. With two outs, Arturo Flores popped out to first baseman D’Angelo Ortiz for the final out.
Charlie Weber went five innings, allowing four hits, four runs, four walks, and four strikeouts, throwing 80 pitches, of which 52 were strikes. Leomar Rosario pitched for Fayetteville at the top of the sixth inning. He went two innings, allowing one hit and two strikeouts, throwing 26 pitches, of which 15 were strikes, to get the final six outs of the game. The Woodpeckers beat the RidgeYaks 6-4 for their 12th straight win.
The Woodpeckers finished game one with five hits, 2 for 6 with runners in scoring position, and left six men on base. Logan Hughes went 1 for 3 with a home run, a walk, and five RBIs. The win went to Fayetteville starter Charlie Weber (6-1), while Leomar Rosaro earned his first save of the season, and the loss went to Salem pitcher Wuilliams Rodriguez (3-5).
In game two, Jank Pichardo was on the mound for Fayetteville against Berny Ortiz of Salem. In the bottom of the first inning with one out, Fayetteville had a runner on third base when Kevin Alvarez hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Kam Durnin for a 1-0 lead. Carlos Cauro was called out on strikes for the third out.
In the bottom of the second inning with one out and a runner on third base, Fayetteville right fielder Juan Sierra hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Aaron Piasecki for a 2-0 lead. Sierra would steal second base. With two outs, Sierra was caught stealing third base, and the inning was over.
Fayetteville starter Jank Pichardo went four innings, allowing two runs, three walks, and three strikeouts, throwing 84 pitches, of which 45 were strikes. Mick Uebelhor pitched for Fayetteville at the top of the fifth inning. He allowed a hit, a walk, and one strikeout, throwing 26 pitches, of which 14 were strikes. Brady Thomas pitched for Fayetteville at the top of the sixth inning.
Thomas gave up two walks with one out. However, Louis Andujar was caught stealing third base, and Andrews Opata was caught also stealing third base to end the inning. Thomas walked two, throwing 13 pitches, of which three were strikes.
Tazwell Butler pitched for Fayetteville at the top of the seventh inning. Salem had a runner on second base with one out when Martin Shelar hit an RBI double to right field, scoring Anderson Fermin. It was now 2-1. Butler would get the final two outs of the game. The Woodpeckers won their 13th straight game over the RidgeYaks 2-1. Butler allowed two hits, a run, and one walk, throwing 24 pitches, of which 13 were strikes.
Fayetteville finished game two with seven hits, committed one error, 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position, and left eight men on base. The win went to Fayetteville pitcher Mick Uebelhor (2-0), while Tazwell Butler earned his third save of the season, and the loss went to Salem starter Berny Ortiz (0-1).
The Woodpeckers hit the road for the final time of the regular season beginning on Tuesday at L. P. Frans Stadium against the Hickory Crawdads at 7 pm on the MLB App and Bally Sports Live.
