For the first time in 30 years, the NASCAR Cup Series held a points race at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Sunday night in the Window World 450. Ryan Blaney started the race on the pole, with Ty Gibbs starting second.
Ty Gibbs led the opening 41 laps before John Hunter Nemechek spun at Turn 2 after making contact with Zane Smith for the first caution of the night. It was one of five cautions throughout the race for 43 laps. Denny Hamlin led nine laps before losing the lead to Shane van Gisbergen. Gisbergen went to pit road on lap 79, handing the lead to Ty Gibbs. Gibbs led two more laps to win the first stage.
In the second stage, there were two more cautions. On lap 184, Alex Bowman and Tyler Reddick made contact at the pit entrance off Turn 2, which resulted in both cars spinning as Bowman tried to enter pit road. On lap 200, Christopher Bell made contact with Josh Berry in Turn 4, causing Berry to spin. Joey Logano would win the second stage.
Joey Logano led a race-high 323 of 450 laps, including the final 70 laps, to win his first race of the season by 0.859 seconds over Denny Hamlin. The win also ends his 46-race winless streak. There were 17 lead changes among nine drivers. Chase Briscoe, Ty Gibbs, and Shane van Gisbergen rounded out the top five. Bubba Wallace, Brad Keselowski, Todd Gilliland, Daniel Suarez, and Ryan Preece completed the top ten. Click here to view the full results.
The Cup Series heads to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400 next Sunday at 2 pm on TNT.
