Alex Palou wins a chaotic Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix

The NTT IndyCar Series visited the streets of Detroit, Michigan, on Sunday afternoon for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear. Alex Palou started the race on the pole, with Will Power starting second.

Palou led the opening 16 laps before he lost the lead to Will Power on lap 17. Palou was in second place before he went to pit road on lap 34, Will Power pitted a lap later, and Christian Lundgaard took the lead. On lap 39, Kyffin Simpson ran into Graham Rahal, spinning him out at Turn 3. He was issued a drive-through penalty for avoidable contact. The caution was one of five through the race for 23 laps. Palou stayed out, while the others went to pit road to retake the lead.

Palou led until lap 64 when he made his final pit stop. Kyle Kirkwood took the lead. Contact between Santino Ferrucci and Rinus VeeKay brought out the caution for the third time on lap 66. Palou would take the lead for good on lap 69. There were two more cautions for the rest of the race, including David Malukas and Mick Schumacher making contact at Turn 5 on lap 73.

Palou led a race-high 71 of 100 laps, including the final 31 laps, to win his fourth race of the season by 3.0584 seconds over Kyle Kirkwood. It was also his 23rd career IndyCar win. Graham Rahal, Pato O’Ward, and Christian Lundgaard rounded out the top five. Felix Rosenqvist, Louis Foster, Marcus Ericsson, Kyffin Simpson, and Josef Newgarden completed the top ten. There were 173 passes, of which 172 were for positions. Josef Newgarden was the most improved driver, starting in 21st place, and finished in 10th place. Alex Palou put down the best lap and best lap led at 93.882 mph.

The NTT IndyCar series heads to World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 9 pm on Fox.
