Fayetteville drops fourth straight game in series finale in Charleston

The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (10-17) and the Charleston RiverDogs (17-10) concluded the six-game series on Sunday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark. Jesus Carrera was on the mound for Fayetteville against Alex Wallace of Charleston.

Fayetteville starter Jesus Carrera pitched a scoreless 4.2 innings, allowing two hits, four walks, and three strikeouts, throwing 84 pitches, of which 50 were strikes. In the bottom of the fifth inning, he walked Marshall Toole with two outs and was replaced by Brandon Cassedy. With the bases loaded, a flyout by Brailer Guerrero ended the inning. Brandon Cassedy allowed a hit and a walk, throwing 11 pitches, of which seven were strikes.

Aubrey Smith was the new pitcher for Fayetteville in the bottom of the sixth inning. He gave up a double to Alberth Palma. Jose Monzon followed up with an RBI single to right field. Palma scored to give the RiverDogs a 1-0 lead. Larry Martinez moved Monzon to third base with a single to center field.

Derek Datil brought home Monzon with a sacrifice fly to center field for a 2-0 lead. Daniel Pierce grounded into a forceout at second base, and the inning would come to an end when Pierce was caught stealing second base.

At the top of the eighth inning, Fayetteville had runners on first and second base when Kevin Alvarez hit an RBI single to center field. German Ramirez scored, and the Woodpeckers cut the deficit to 2-1. Alveraz went to second base, and D.J. Newman went to third base. With two outs, a groundout by Anthony Huezo ended the inning.

Fayetteville pitcher Aubrey Smith finished the game by pitching three innings, allowing five hits, two runs, and two strikeouts, throwing 45 pitches, of which 33 were strikes.

At the top of the ninth inning, Fayetteville second baseman Nick Monistere worked a four-pitch walk, and later went to second base on a wild pitch. A flyout by Josh Wakefield moved Monistere to third base. Nehomar Ochoa Jr. grounded out to shortstop, and Arturo Flores grounded out to third base for the final out of the game. The Woodpeckers lose to the RiverDogs by the final score of 2-1. It is their fourth-straight loss. Fayetteville loses the series 5-1.

The Woodpeckers finished the game with two hits, went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position, and left six men on base. Kevin Alvarez went 1 for 3 with an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base. The loss went to Fayetteville pitcher Aubrey Smith (0-2), and the win went to Charleston pitcher Trey Pooser (4-0).

The Woodpeckers return to Segra Stadium on Tuesday to begin a six-game series against the Wilson Warbirds at 6:05 pm on the MLB App.
