Report: Ottawa Redblacks sign kicker Brett Lauther

The Ottawa Redblacks signed kicker Brett Lauther on Thursday according to Justin Dunk of 3DownNation.

Brett Lauther is six foot one and weighs 195 pounds. The 35-year-old from Truro, Nova Scotia, made 39 of 54 field goals (72.2%) with a long of 59 yards, and made 31 of 34 extra points in 16 games. 4 of 6 field goals (66%) with a long of 48 yards, five extra points, and eight kickoffs for 481 yards (60.1 AVG), helping the Roughriders win the 112th Grey Cup. The Roughriders released him on February 6, 2026.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats drafted Lauther in the seventh round (53rd pick) of the 2017 CFL Draft. He made four field goals in a Week 13 contest against the Montreal Alouettes and was named Special Teams Player of the Week. Lauther also had stints with the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Eskimos.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Lauther as a free agent on September 3, 2015. In 2023, he made 36 of 44 field goals (81.8%) with a long of 54 yards and made 27 of 29 extra points in 18 games. He won the Tom Pate Memorial Award in 2023. The Roughriders re-signed Lauther on January 22, 2024. In 2024, he made 53 of 64 field goals (82.8%) with a long of 55 yards and made 39 of 39 extra points in 18 games.

In seven seasons, Lauther made 295 of 360 field goals (81.9%) with a long of 59 yards, made 200 of 215 extra points, and punted the ball five times for 108 yards (28.4 AVG) in 114 games. He was named a CFL West All-Star in 2018. He leaves Saskatchewan ranked third all-time in points scored as a Roughrider (1,110) behind Dave Ridgway and Paul McCallum.

Collegiately, Lauther played four seasons at St. Mary’s University (2009-12), making 33 of 47 field goals (70%) with a long of 50 yards, making 49 of 49 extra points (100%), and punting the ball 146 times for 5,534 yards (37.9 AVG) with a long of 78 yards, 25 from inside the 20-yard line and four touchbacks in 18 games for the Huskies.
