The NASCAR Cup Series visited Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon in the Food City 500. Ryan Blaney started the race on the pole, with Tyler Reddick starting second. Alex Bowman made his return after missing four races due to vertigo.
Ryan Blaney led the opening 43 laps before losing the lead to Kyle Larson. Blaney led 190 laps. Larson led a race-high 284 of 505 laps, including sweeping the stages. There were a total of nine cautions for 72 laps. Among the cautions was Alex Bowman, when he was involved in a four-car pileup on lap 161 that started when Shane van Gisbergen spun at Turn 4. John Hunter Nemechek and Todd Gilliland were also involved. Gisbergen, Nemechek, and Gilliland were able to continue the race.
Late in the race, Ty Gibbs took the lead away from Ryan Blaney on lap 481. Gibbs was fighting both Blaney and Larson to keep the lead. The race went to overtime after Riley Herbst hit the wall at Turn 1. In overtime, Gibbs held off Blaney and Larson to win his first career Cup Series race by 0.055 seconds over Ryan Blaney.
Gibbs led the final 25 laps. It was his 131st career Cup Series start. Kyle Larson, Tyler Reddick, and Chase Briscoe rounded out the top five. Todd Gilliland, Joey Logano, Ryan Preece, Denny Hamlin, and Carson Hocevar completed the top ten. Click here for the rest of the finishing order.
