The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (5-1) were back at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Thursday night against the Durham Bulls (1-5). Alan Rangel was on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Logan Workman of Durham.
At the top of the second inning, Lehigh Valley had runners on first and second base when catcher Garrett Stubbs hit Workman’s four-seam fastball for a three-run home run at 404 feet to center field to give the IronPigs a 3-0 lead. The exit velocity off the bat was 101.4 mph.
Moving to the top of the fifth inning, Lehigh Valley shortstop Sergio Alcántara started the inning with a single and later went to second base on a wild pitch by Logan Workman. Lehigh Valley second baseman Robert Moore was up next. He hit Workman’s slider for an RBI double to the corner of right field. Sergio Alcántara scored to extend Lehigh Valley’s lead to 4-0. Lehigh Valley did not add any more runs in the inning.
Lehigh Valley starter Alan Rangel had a good night, pitching six innings, allowing three hits, three walks, and six strikeouts, throwing 85 pitches, of which 58 were strikes.
Griff McGarry, Lou Trivino, and Chase Shugart finished the game combing to pitch three innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and five strikeouts as the IronPigs shut out the Durham Bulls by the final score of 4-0.
Lehigh Valley finished the night with eight hits, committed one error, went 3 for 8 with runners in scoring position, and left seven men on base. Lehigh Valley catcher Garrett Stubbs went 2 for 4 with a single, a home run, and three RBIs. Center fielder Pedro Leon went 2 for 3 with two singles, a walk, and a stolen base. The win went to Lehigh Valley starter Alan Rangel for his first win of the season, while the loss went to Durham starter Logan Workman.
The IronPigs and Bulls play game four on Friday at 6:45 pm on the MLB App. Zack Wheeler (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second rehab start against Brody Hopkins (0-0, 2.35 ERA) of Durham.
