The Repco Supercars Championship continued the DUNLOP Sydney 500 weekend with Race 2 on Saturday night from Sydney Motorsports Park. Anton De Pasquale started the race on the pole with Brodie Kostecki starting second.
Pasquale and Kostecki battled it out when the lights went off, and Anton was able to hold on to the lead with Kostecki right on his tail, giving him a couple of bumps from the rear. While those two were battling for the lead, Aaron Cameron and Matthew Payne got into the battle.
The first and only caution of the race came out on the ninth lap when Andre Heimgartner’s Toyota Supra’s engine expired. This led to a chaotic pit road that saw Jayden Ojeda lose a right rear tire, Brodie Kostecki fell to fourth place, and Broc Feeney made contact with James Golding exiting pit road.
Anton De Pasquale was still the leader. The cars behind him were eager for the restart, causing cars to get out of line. De Pasquale hit the gas, and the race was back underway. He was able to hold off Matthew Payne to keep the lead. Meanwhile, Broc Feeney was issued a 15-second penalty for an unsafe release. Feeney’s teammate, Will Brown, was also issued a 15-second penalty for a pit stop infringement.
Late in the race, Brodie Kostecki chased down Matthew Payne for second place with 10 laps to go. With two laps to go, he was two seconds behind Anton De Pasquale and continued to trim the lead. Anton De Pasquale went on to win his first race of the season over Brodie Kostecki by 0.3627 seconds.
Matthew Payne, Cameron Waters, and David Reynolds rounded out the top five. Broc Feeney, Ryan Wood, Kai Allen, Jack Le Brocq, and James Golding completed the top ten.
Day three of the DUNLOP Sydney 500 gets underway today at 4:40 pm on YouTube.
