Edmonton Elks linebacker Josiah Schakel Announces Retirement

The Edmonton Elks placed linebacker Josiah Schakel on the retired list on Monday according to the CFL Transactions page.

Josiah Schakel is six foot one and weighs 220 pounds. The 26-year-old from St. Catherines, Ontario, in 2025 made one tackle and eight tackles on special teams in 15 games.

The Calgary Stampeders drafted Schakel in the second round (14th round) in the 2022 CFL Draft. In 2022, he made one tackle in seven games. The Edmonton Elks signed Schakel on June 26, 2023. In 2023, he made 15 tackles on special teams in 15 games. In 2024, Schakel made six tackles on special teams in nine games.

Collegiately, Schakel played four seasons at the University of Alberta (2018-21) with 168 tackles (118 solos, 50 assists), 19.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, one interception for 71 yards, one touchdown, and five pass breakups in 22 games for the Golden Bears. He was named U Sports Defensive Player of the Year in 2021.
