The Toronto Argonauts announced its 2026 coaching staff on Thursday. Among the coaches, former CFL running back Ka’Deem Carey is retiring and will be the team’s running backs coach.
Ka’Deem Carey is five foot nine and weighs 206 pounds. The 33-year-old from Tucson, Arizona, re-signed with the Argonauts on February 11, 2025. In 2025, he had three carries for 14 yards in one preseason game. The Argonauts released Carey on May 31, 2025.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Carey on June 9, 2025. In 2025, he had nine carries for 41 yards and one catch for nine yards in three games before an injury ended his season.
The Chicago Bears drafted Carey in the fourth round (117th pick) of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played three seasons in Chicago with 111 carries for 443 yards, two touchdowns, 13 catches for 131 yards, and one touchdown in 37 games.
The Calgary Stampeders signed Carey on October 3, 2018. He was on the practice squad when the Stampeders won the Grey Cup over the Ottawa Redblacks. Carey played four seasons in Calgary with 492 carries for 2,855 yards, 19 touchdowns, 127 catches for 732 yards, one touchdown, and three tackles in 44 games.
In 2023, Carey had 89 carries for 476 yards, 29 catches for 156 yards, and one tackle in nine games. Carey is a two-time CFL West All-Star (2021-22) and a CFL All-Star in 2022.
The Toronto Argonauts signed Carey on February 14, 2024. In 2024, Carey had 191 carries for 1,060 yards, seven touchdowns, 37 catches for 356 yards, one touchdown, and two tackles in 18 games.
In the 111th Grey Cup, Carey had 15 carries for 79 yards, one touchdown, and three catches for 10 yards, helping the Argonauts beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 41-24 to win their second Grey Cup title in three seasons.
Collegiately, Carey played three seasons at Arizona (2011-13) with 743 carries for 4,239 yards, 48 touchdowns, 77 catches for 679 yards, and four touchdowns in 36 games for the Wildcats. He was a two-time First Team All-Pac 12 (2012-13), two-time All-American (2012-13), and the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2013.
Another addition to the coaching staff is Greg Quick, who will be the team’s defensive coordinator. The 69-year-old spent the last five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, helping them win a Grey Cup in 2023. He has more than 40 years of coaching experience in the CFL and NCAA. This will be his third stint in Toronto.
Quick was with the Argonauts from 2010 through 2011, and again in 2018. He was also a defensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2015. He began his coaching career in 1979 at Emporia State University. He spent 30 years in college, including being named a head coach at the University of Chicago in 1989, where he went 11-38 overall for the Maroons.
