The Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed defensive back Deatrick Nichols to a one-year contract extension on Thursday. He was scheduled to be a free agent in February.
Deatrick Nichols is five foot nine and weighs 180 pounds. The 31-year-old from Miami, Florida, made 37 tackles in 18 games for the Blue Bombers in 2025.
The Arizona Cardinals signed Nichols as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2018. In 2018, he made 21 tackles (17 solos, 4 assists) in four preseason games. He played two regular-season games with one tackle (1 solo). In 2019, he made eight tackles (6 solos, 2 assists) in three preseason games. The Cardinals released him on August 31, 2019.
In 2020, Nichols played for the Houston Roughnecks (XFL) with 25 tackles (17 solos, 8 assists), one sack, and three interceptions for 35 yards in five games before the league shutdown due to the pandemic. The New Orleans Saints signed Nichols on March 24, 2020. There were no preseason games that year, and he was released on August 2, 2020. He signed with the Miami Dolphins on August 13, 2020, but he was released on September 1, 2020.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Nichols as a free agent on February 5, 2021. In 2021, he made 43 tackles, three tackles on special teams, one sack, and three interceptions, helping the Blue Bombers win the Grey Cup over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
In 2022, he made 46 tackles and one interception in 17 games. In 2023, Nichols made 37 tackles, one tackle on special teams, and one forced fumble in 18 games. Last year, he made 48 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one touchdown in 17 games.
Nichols is a three-time CFL West All-Star (2021-22, 2024), a two-time CFL All-Star (2021-22), and a Grey Cup champion in 2021.
Collegiately, Nichols played four seasons at South Florida (2014-17) with 175 tackles (136 solos, 39 assists), 14.5 tackles for loss, one sack, 11 interceptions, 35 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 50 games for the Bulls. He was a two-time First Team All-AAC (2015, 2017) and a Second Team All-AAC in 2016.
