Birmingham Stallions Head Coach Skip Holtz to step away from the UFL

The United Football League (UFL) announced on Tuesday that Birmingham Stallions Head Coach Skip Holtz is stepping away to evaluate other opportunities. A new head coach will be named at a later date. Skip Holtz released a statement.

“Coaching the Stallions has been one of the great honors of my career. I’m grateful for the players, staff, the City of Birmingham, and our passionate fans who helped create such a special and winning culture. What we accomplished together is something I’ll always treasure.

I am not retiring. This is simply the right moment to pause, reflect, and look ahead. I’m excited about the next steps in my journey and energized by new possibilities. I look forward to seeing where this path leads.”

Skip Holtz is 61 years old and from Willimantic, Connecticut. He was named the head coach of the Birmingham Stallions on January 20, 2022. Holtz led the Stallions to a 33-7 record and 6-1 in the playoffs, winning two USFL championships in 2022 and 2023, and the UFL title in 2024. Holtz was also named the USFL Coach of the Year in 2023.

“Head Coach Skip Holtz can be summed up in one word – Champion. When they write the first chapter of the history of the United Football League, Skip and his three-time champion Birmingham Stallions will be the first names to jump off the page,” said UFL President & CEO Russ Brandon. “He leaves the UFL with the respect and gratitude of our owners, executives, coaches, players, and, especially myself. We wish Skip, his wife Jennifer, and their entire family the best of luck.”

In college, Holtz began in coaching career as a Graduate assistant at Florida State in 1987. He also had stops at Colorado State, Notre Dame, Connecticut, South Carolina, East Carolina, South Florida, and Louisiana Tech.

He went 152-121, winning two Conference USA championships, two Conference USA East Divisions, three Conference USA West Divisions, Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2016, and the Atlantic 10 New England Division in 1998. He won three bowl games at Louisiana Tech, including the Heart of Dallas Bowl, Armed Forces Bowl, and the Independence Bowl.
