The Montreal Alouettes re-signed kicker Jose Maltos Diaz to a contract extension through the 2027 season on Thursday.
Jose Maltos Diaz is five foot ten and weighs 221 pounds. The 34-year-old from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, re-signed with the Alouettes on November 21, 2024. In 2025, he made 58 of 65 field goals (89.2%) with a long of 58 yards, 32 of 33 extra points, 67 kickoffs for 4,222 yards, with a long of 82 yards, and one carry for five yards in 18 games. His 58-yard field goal broke the single-season franchise record previously held by David Duval since 2009 (55).
In the playoffs, Diaz made 5 of 5 field goals (100%) with a long of 45 yards, and five kickoffs for 322 yards (64.4 AVG), with a long of 70 yards, as the Alouettes reached the 112th Grey Cup against the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The New Orleans Saints signed Maltos as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2013. He was released on August 6, 2013. The B.C. Lions signed Maltos on May 18, 2018, but he was released on June 10, 2018. The Ottawa Redblacks drafted Maltos in the first round (2nd pick) of the 2019 CFL-LFA Draft. He dressed in 11 games in three seasons for the Redblacks.
The Montreal Alouettes signed Maltos on December 9, 2022. In 2023, he converted 7 of 9 field goals (77.8%), made 5 of 7 extra points, two singles, and ten kickoffs for 610 yards with a long of 76 yards in two games.
The Alouettes re-signed Diaz on December 15, 2023. In 2024, Maltos made 33 of 36 field goals (91.7%) with a long of 53 yards, made 22 of 24 extra points, and 45 kickoffs for 2,880 yards (64%) with a long of 84 yards in 14 games.
Collegiately, Maltos played at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. He was named to the ONEFA Liga Mayor Team of the Decade for the 2010s by Mundo del Ovoide.
