The Edmonton Elks released quarterback Zach Zebrowski, wide receivers Ayir Asante and Justin McGriff, defensive lineman Gavin Meyer, linebacker Alexander Mueller, and defensive back Bryce Cosby on Saturday according to the CFL Transactions page. These players were on the practice squad and became free agents after Edmonton’s season ended on Friday night.
Zach Zebrowski is six foot two and weighs 208 pounds. The 24-year-old from Decatur, Illinois, attended the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings rookie minicamps in 2025. The Edmonton Elks signed Zebrowski to the practice squad on September 23, 2025.
Collegiately, Zebrowski played three seasons at Southern Illinois (2020-22), completing 7 of 11 passes (64%) for 57 yards, one touchdown, and four carries for 33 yards in seven games for the Salukis.
Then, he transferred to Central Missouri (2023-24), completing 789 of 1,155 passes (68%) for 9,881 yards, averaging 395.2 passing yards per game, 101 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, 233 carries for 1,132 yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, and one tackle (1 solo) in 25 games for the Mules.
Zebrowski was named a two-time winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy, a two-time First Team All-American by the Associated Press, a two-time First Team All-American by AFCA, and a two-time First Team All-MIAA.
Ayir Asante is six foot and weighs 178 pounds. The 24-year-old from Franklin Township, New Jersey, signed with the Ottawa Redblacks on January 21, 2025.
In 2025, he made three catches for 27 yards, two kick returns for 43 yards, and four punt returns for 22 yards in one preseason game to earn a spot on the practice squad. The Redblacks released him on June 17, 2025. The Edmonton Elks signed Asante to the practice squad on August 27, 2025.
The New York Giants signed Asante as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2024. In 2024, Asante made one catch for no yards, two kick returns for 71 yards, and two punt returns for 13 yards in three preseason games. The Giants released him on August 25, 2024.
Collegiately, Asante played four seasons at Holy Cross (2019-22) with 117 catches for 1,718 yards, 16 touchdowns, four carries for 66 yards, one touchdown, 26 kick returns for 485 yards, three punt returns for two yards, and six tackles (5 solos, 1 assist) in 40 games for the Crusaders. He was named a three-time Second Team All-Patriot League (2019-21).
Then, he transferred to Wyoming in 2023 with 18 catches for 276 yards, four touchdowns, four carries for 11 yards, one touchdown, and eight kick returns for 166 yards in 11 games for the Cowboys.
Justin McGriff is six foot six and weighs 215 pounds. The 25-year-old from Tampa, Florida, signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on May 5, 2023.
In 2023, he made four catches for 58 yards against the Toronto Argonauts in a preseason game. Later in camp, McGriff tore his ACL and missed the rest of the 2023 season. He would later be transferred to the league suspension list and became a free agent after the 2024 season. The Edmonton Elks signed McGriff to the practice squad on October 6, 2025.
Collegiately, McGriff appeared in one game at Nebraska in 2018, recording no stats for the Cornhuskers. Next, he transferred to ASA Miami in 2019, making 25 catches for 360 yards and eight touchdowns in seven games for the Silver Storm.
Then, McGriff transferred to Utah State (2020-22) with 80 catches for 1,037 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four tackles (4 solos) in 33 games for the Aggies. His 1,037 yards made him the 37th player in school history with 1,000 career receiving yards. In 2022, McGriff made 30 passes for 438 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games.
Gavin Meyer is six foot three and weighs 290 pounds. The 23-year-old from Franklin, Wisconsin, attended the Miami Dolphins rookie minicamp in 2025. He also worked out for the Denver Broncos. The Edmonton Elks signed Meyer to the practice squad on September 16, 2025.
Collegiately, Meyer played four seasons at Wyoming (2020-23) with 67 tackles (34 solos, 33 assists), 8.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, one forced fumble, and two blocked kicks in 32 games for the Cowboys. Then, he transferred to USC in 2024 with 32 tackles (18 solos, 14 assists), two tackles for loss, one sack, three pass breakups, and one blocked kick in 13 games for the Trojans.
Alexander Mueller is six foot three and weighs 235 pounds. The 23-year-old from Wheaton, Illinois, attended the Kansas City Chiefs rookie minicamp in 2025. The Edmonton Elks signed Mueller to the practice squad on September 16, 2025.
Collegiately, Mueller played four seasons at Northwestern (2021-24) with 273 tackles (146 solos, 127 assists), 26 tackles for loss, nine sacks, six interceptions for 58 yards, two touchdowns, 14 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 45 games for the Wildcats.
He was named Third Team All-Big Ten in 2023, All-Big Ten Honorable Mention in 2024, and served as the team captain in 2024.
Bryce Cosby is five foot ten and weighs 185 pounds. The 26-year-old from Louisville, Kentucky, signed with the Montreal Alouettes on January 30, 2024. In 2024, he made 55 tackles, 12 tackles on special teams, one sack, and two interceptions in 18 games.
In 2025, he made two tackles in two preseason games. The Alouettes released him on May 31, 2025. The Edmonton Elks signed Cosby to the practice squad on July 20, 2025. He appeared in one regular-season game for Edmonton with one tackle on special teams.
The Las Vegas Raiders signed Cosby as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2022. In 2022, he made 11 tackles (7 solos, 4 assists) and one pass breakup in four preseason games. In 2023, he made five tackles (4 solos, 1 assist) in three preseason games. The Raiders released him on August 27, 2023.
Collegiately, Cosby played five seasons at Ball State (2017-21) with 391 tackles (228 solos, 163 assists), 22.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, ten interceptions, 26 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in 57 games for the Cardinals. He was named First Team All-MAC and the Arizona Bowl Defensive Player of the Game in 2020.
