Vernon Adams Jr. throws three touchdowns as Stampeders rout Argonauts

The Calgary Stampeders (10-7) hosted the Toronto Argonauts (5-13) on Saturday night at McMahon Stadium. This was the final game for the Toronto Argonauts in 2025. The Argonauts used this game to get a look at some of the players for 2026.

For Calgary, they did not have offensive linemen Joshua Coker (Knee) and Tomas Jack-Kurdyla (Calf), defensive lineman Lorenzo Mauldin (Ankle), and defensive back Jackson Sombach (Ankle).

First Quarter:

Toronto got the ball to start the game on the 38-yard line. Quarterback Jarret Doege completed a nine-yard pass to Jake Herslow, and running back Deonta McMahon rushed for six yards to the 53-yard line. On the next play, Doege faked a handoff before throwing the ball intended for David Ungerer III. However, Calgary defensive back Adrian Greene intercepted it for a pick-six 64-yard touchdown. The Stampeders took a 7-0 lead with 12:47 left.

Toronto had the ball on the 53-yard line. Jarret Doege completed an eight-yard pass to Jake Herslow. Doege would get sacked on the next play by Charles Wiley for a four-yard loss on the 49-yard line. Kicker Lirim Hajrullahu made a 56-yard field goal. The Argonauts trailed the Stampeders 7-3 with 11:06 left.

Later, Calgary wide receiver Jalen Philpot rushed for four yards to the seven-yard line. Next, Vernon Adams Jr. threw a short pass to Dedrick Mills for a gain of 31 yards to the 38-yard line. Mills also rushed for 17 yards to the 55-yard line.

On the next play, Toronto pressured Adams Jr. He ran to his right side before throwing the ball to Dominique Rhymes. He caught it and ran in for the touchdown. The Stampeders extended their lead to 14-3 with 4:10 left. Vernon Adams Jr. now has over 20,000 passing yards for his career.

Toronto had the ball on the 39-yard line. The offense moved the ball to the 43-yard line before kicker Lirim Hajrullahu made a 50-yard field goal. The Argonauts trailed the Stampeders 14-6 with 34 seconds left. Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. threw a three-yard pass to Jalen Philpot, and that was all they got. They faced third down to start the second quarter up 14-6.

Calgary’s offense had 116 yards (89 yards passing, 27 yards rushing), and Toronto’s offense had 58 yards (63 yards passing, 7 yards rushing, 12 yards lost).

Second Quarter:

In the second quarter, Toronto quarterback Jarret Doege threw three straight passes for 23 yards to the 38-yard line. Late in the second quarter, Toronto’s offense moved the ball to the 40-yard line. Kicker Lirim Hajrullahu missed a 47-yard field goal wide left. Calgary returner Kaylon Horton conceded the single point. It was now 21-7 with 2:03 left.

Vernon Adams Jr. started the next drive by throwing a 21-yard pass to Erik Brooks. Dedrick Mills rushed for 15 yards, and Tevin Jones caught a pass for 24 yards to the 10-yard line. Dedrick Mills rushed for another three yards before Vernon Adams Jr. threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Philpot for a 28-7 lead at halftime.

Calgary’s offense had 275 yards (181 yards passing, 96 yards rushing, 2 yards lost), 13 first downs, 2 for 2 in the red zone, and the team was penalized two times for 15 yards. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. completed 9 of 11 passes (81%) for 181 yards and three touchdowns.

Running back Dedrick Mills had eight carries for 87 yards and two catches for 62 yards. Wide receiver Dominique Rhymes made one catch for 55 yards and one touchdown, while Tevin Jones made two catches for 27 yards and one touchdown. The defense made four sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, and one touchdown.

Toronto’s offense had 132 yards (119 yards passing, 49 yards rushing, 36 yards lost), 10 first downs, no red zone opportunities, and the team was penalized two times for 24 yards.

Third Quarter:

Calgary got the ball to start the third quarter on the 50-yard line. Running back Dedrick Mills had three carries for 24 yards, and Vernon Adams Jr. threw an 11-yard pass to Jalen Philpot to the 25-yard line.

Two plays later, Adams Jr.’s pass intended for Damien Alford was incomplete, but a defensive pass interference penalty on Toronto placed the ball on the one-yard line. Dedrick Mills came in to score the touchdown for a 35-7 lead with 10:49 left to cap off a seven-play drive for 60 yards.

Tucker Horn was the new quarterback for Toronto. He completed one pass for six yards as the teams went two-and-out. Later, Horn’s pass intended for Makai Polk was tipped and intercepted by Godfrey Onyeka. He returned it for 14 yards to the 51-yard line.

Vernon Adams Jr. rushed for 16 yards, and Dedrick Mills rushed for one yard to the 34-yard line. Toronto pressured Adams Jr. and was sacked by Joe Wallace for a seven-yard loss. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 49-yard field goal for a 38-7 lead with 2:57 left.

Late in the third quarter, Josh Love was the new quarterback for Calgary. Love completed a 13-yard pass to Jalen Philpot, and Dedrick Mills rushed for a yard, but an illegal blocking penalty moved the ball back to the 21-yard line. The Stampeders faced second down to begin the fourth quarter leading 38-7.

Fourth Quarter:

In the fourth quarter, Josh Love completed a short pass to Ludovick Choquette for a two-yard loss. The Stampeders replaced more starters as the game got out of reach.

Later, Love completed a 50-yard pass to Jalen Philpot to the 38-yard line. He would complete another pass to Clint Barnes for one yard. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 45-yard field goal for a 41-7 lead with 9:32 left.

Tucker Horn’s night was done, and Max Duggan was the new quarterback. He completed one pass for five yards. On third down, Toronto punter Josh Haggerty’s punt was blocked by Adam Bighill. He returned it for 10 yards to the 36-yard line.

A penalty by Toronto moved the ball to the 31-yard line. Calgary running back Ludovick Choquette rushed for three yards, and Josh Love threw a five-yard pass to Clint Barnes. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 30-yard field goal for a 44-7 lead with 4:58 left.

After Toronto went three-and-out, Calgary’s offense moved the ball to the 43-yard line. Kicker Rene Paredes had a chance to add another three points, but missed a 50-yard field goal wide right. Late in the game, Toronto quarterback Max Duggan threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Brown. They went for a two-point conversion and did not get it. The Calgary Stampeders defeated the Toronto Argonauts 44-13.

Final Stats:

Calgary’s offense had 406 yards (280 yards passing, 145 yards rushing, 19 yards lost), 22 first downs, 3 for 3 in the red zone, and the team was penalized seven times for 60 yards. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. completed 12 of 14 passes (85.7%) for 213 yards, three touchdowns, and one carry for 16 yards. Backup quarterback Josh Love completed 5 of 8 passes (62.5%) for 67 yards.

Running back Dedrick Mills had 14 carries for 115 yards, one rushing touchdown, and two catches for 62 yards. Wide receiver Dominique Rhymes made one catch for 55 yards and one touchdown, while Tevin Jones made two catches for 27 yards and one touchdown, and Jalen Philpot made six catches for 98 yards and one touchdown. The defense made 45 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one touchdown.

Toronto’s offense had 278 yards (246 yards passing, 68 yards rushing, 36 yards lost), 17 first downs, 1 for 1 in the red zone, and the team was penalized eight times for 91 yards.

Quarterback Tucker Horn completed 4 of 8 passes (50%) for 18 yards and one interception. Third-string quarterback Max Duggan completed 13 of 16 passes (81.2%) for 109 yards, one touchdown, and four carries for 45 yards. Running back Deonta McMahon had one carry for six yards. Wide receiver Jake Herslow made seven catches for 92 yards, while Kevin Mital made 10 catches for 69 yards. The defense made 36 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two sacks.
