Davis Alexander overcomes an elbow injury to lead the Alouettes to victory in Ottawa

The Montreal Alouettes (10-7) visited the Ottawa Redblacks (4-13) on Saturday afternoon in their final meeting of the regular season. Tyrie Adams got the start at quarterback for the Redblacks. The Alouettes did not have wide receiver James Letcher Jr. (Lower Leg), offensive lineman Jamar McGloster (Wrist), and defensive back Robert Kennedy III (Hamstring).

First Quarter:

Montreal started the first quarterback on the 46-yard line. On the third play from scrimmage, Ottawa’s defense blitzed Alexander. Ottawa linebacker Davion Taylor hit Alexander on the right elbow for an incomplete pass. Alexander was down for several minutes before getting up and walking to the sidelines. On third down, Montreal punter Joseph Zema punted the ball 41 yards to Ottawa returner Kalil Pimpleton, who returned it for 14 yards to the 18-yard line.

Ottawa’s offense moved the ball to the 52-yard line before the drive stalled. Montreal got the ball back on the 28-yard line. Davis Alexander stayed in the game. Running back Stevie Scott III started the drive with a six-yard run, followed by Alexander throwing a 22-yard pass to Tyler Snead. Stevie Scott III got another carry for five yards.

Next, Alexander threw two passes for 39 yards to the 10-yard line. Then, Alexander handed the ball off to Stevie Scott III, who made a cut to his right side and easily walked in for the touchdown. The Alouettes took a 7-0 lead with 6:41 left to cap off a six-play drive for 82 yards.

Montreal’s defense quickly got Ottawa off the field, including defensive lineman Mustafa Johnson sacking Tyrie Adams for an 11-yard loss. Montreal had the ball on the 36-yard line. Davis Alexander began the drive by throwing a 26-yard pass to Tyler Snead.

Second Quarter:

In the second quarter, Montreal’s offense moved the ball to the 50-yard line. On third down, they tried a trick play with Joseph Zemu tossing the ball to Eno Benjiman. He ran for seven yards, but Daniel Adeboboye tackled him short of the first down. Ottawa took over on the 49-yard line.

Late in the second quarter, Ottawa moved the ball to the 38-yard line. Kicker Lewis Ward made a 45-yard field goal. The Redblacks trailed the Alouettes 16-10 at halftime.

First Half Stats:

Montreal’s offense had 265 yards (205 yards passing, 75 yards rushing, 15 yards lost), 13 first downs, 2 for 2 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 50 yards. Quarterback Davis Alexander completed 10 of 14 passes (71.4%) for 198 yards and one carry for nine yards.

Running back Stevie Scott III had nine carries for 57 yards, one rushing touchdown, and three catches for 37 yards. Wide receiver Austin Mack made three catches for 79 yards, while Tyler Snead made three catches for 39 yards. The defense made two tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble.

Running back Daniel Adeboboye had one carry for two yards. Wide receiver Bralon Addison made two catches for 55 yards, while Justin Hardy made one catch for 26 yards. The defense had one tackle for loss, two sacks, and one forced fumble.

Third Quarter:

In the third quarter, Montreal linebacker Najee Murray intercepted Tyrie Adams. He returned it for 25 yards to the 32-yard line. Quarterback Davis Alexander completed two passes for eight yards to the 24-yard line. Kicker Jose Maltos made a 32-yard field goal for a 19-10 lead with 12:39 left.

Ottawa moved the ball to the 54-yard line. Montreal defensive lineman Geoffrey Cantin-Arku sacked Adams for a seven-yard loss. On third down, Ottawa punter Richie Leone’s punt was blocked by Bubba Bolden on the 34-yard line.

Quarterback Davis Alexander completed two passes for 16 yards, while running back Stevie Scott III had a carry for three yards, and third-string quarterback Shea Patterson rushed for two yards to the 13-yard line. The drive stalled, and kicker Jose Maltos made a 20-yard field goal for a 22-10 lead with 7:31 left.

Late in the third quarter, Tyrice Beverette intercepted Tyrie Adams and returned it for 38 yards to the 22-yard line. On the second play, Alexander threw a touchdown pass to Austin Mack for a 29-10 lead to end the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

In the fourth quarter, Ottawa quarterback Tyrie Adams threw two passes for 15 yards, and running back William Stanback rushed for 13 yards to the 38-yard line. Kicker Lewis Ward made a 46-yard field goal. The Redblacks trailed the Alouettes 29-13 with 12:26 left.

Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander threw a 37-yard pass to Tyler Snead to the 33-yard line. Two plays later, he threw to Snead again for five yards. A spearing penalty on Adarius Pickett placed the ball on the 13-yard line. Then, Alexander threw a touchdown pass to Charleston Rambo for a 36-13 lead with 10:06 left to cap off a five-play drive for 70 yards.

Later, Ottawa’s offense moved the ball to the 9-yard line. Tyrie Adams threw a touchdown pass to Keelan White. Then, Ottawa converted the two-point play when Adams threw the ball to Kalil Pimpleton. It was now 36-21 with 5:34 left to cap off a 10-play drive for 58 yards.

Ottawa’s special teams successfully made an onside kick to get the ball back on the 45-yard line. The offense took a lot of time off the clock, marching to the one-yard line. A procedure penalty on Ottawa backed them to the six-yard line. Then, Adams threw a screen pass to Daniel Adeboboye. He had a couple of blockers in front of him to score the touchdown. The Redblacks trailed the Alouettes 36-28 with 1:49 left in the game.

Montreal would recover the onside kick on the 36-yard line. Davis Alexander threw an eight-yard pass to Tyler Snead to the 28-yard line. They could not get the first down, and kicker Jose Maltos made a 36-yard field goal for a 39-28 lead with 55 seconds left.

Ottawa quarterback Tyrie Adams threw two passes for 21 yards to the 50-yard line. Then, he threw another pass to Eugene Lewis. Lewis fumbled the ball, and Montreal defensive back Wesley Sutton recovered it to end the game. The Alouettes defeated the Redblacks 39-28. With the win, Montreal stays in the race for the East Division with one game left to play.

Final Stats:

Montreal’s offense had 396 yards (335 yards passing, 83 yards rushing, 22 yards lost), 21 first downs, 3 for 4 in the red zone, and the team was penalized eight times for 86 yards. Quarterback Davis Alexander completed 21 of 31 passes (67.7%) for 335 yards and one carry for nine yards.

Running back Stevie Scott III had 13 carries for 63 yards, one rushing touchdown, and five catches for 52 yards. Wide receiver Austin Mack made five catches for 108 yards and one touchdown, while Tyler Snead made seven catches for 114 yards. The defense made 46 tackles, three tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Ottawa’s offense had 312 yards (286 yards passing, 61 yards rushing, 35 yards lost), 25 first downs, 3 for 4 in the red zone, and the team was penalized five times for 46 yards. Quarterback Tyrie Adams completed 27 of 44 passes (61.3%) for 286 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and eight carries for 26 yards.

Running back William Stanback had seven carries for 18 yards. Wide receiver Bralon Addison made five catches for 78 yards, while Eugene Lewis made five catches for 37 yards and one touchdown. The defense made 42 tackles, one tackle for loss, three sacks, and one forced fumble.
