The NASCAR Cup Series closed out Labor Day Weekend on Sunday night from Darlington Raceway for the 7th running of the Cook Out Southern 500. Denny Hamlin started the race on the pole, and Chase Briscoe started second.
Two laps into the race, Josh Berry lost control of the car and hit Tyler Reddick at Turn 2, causing a five-car crash that also involved Daniel Suarez, Kyle Busch, and Chris Buescher. Berry went behind the wall, while the others were able to continue the race.
The crash was one of seven cautions throughout the race. Another driver who was involved was Ryan Blaney on lap 211 when he was hit from behind by Austin Dillon.
Chase Briscoe dominated the race, leading 309 of 367 laps that included winning both stages. Late in the race, Briscoe had Tyler Reddick and Erik Jones behind him. On the last lap, Reddick gave everything he had, but it was not enough as Briscoe won the race by 0.408 seconds over Reddick. Erik Jones, John H Nemechek, and A.J. Allmendinger rounded out the top five.
Bubba Wallace, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Carson Hocevar, and Chris Buscher rounded out the top ten. There were 24 lead changes among ten drivers. With the win, Briscoe advances to the Round of 12. It was also his second consecutive Southern 500 victory, second win of the season, and the fourth of his career.
The Cup Series heads to World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway next Sunday at 3 pm on USA Network.
