The Saskatchewan Roughriders released defensive back Eddie Heckard from the practice squad on Tuesday.

Eddie Heckard is five foot ten and weighs 190 pounds. The 26-year-old from Las Vegas, Nevada, attended the Denver Broncos rookie minicamp in 2024. The Saskatchewan Roughriders signed Heckard on December 16, 2024. In 2025, Heckard made three tackles and one interception in two preseason games. The Roughriders placed him on the practice squad.

Collegiately, Heckard played five seasons at Weber State University (2018-22) making 215 tackles (156 solos, 59 assists), 13.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, seven interceptions for 83 yards, 38 pass breakups, six forced fumbles, four sacks, one fumble recovery, and one touchdown in 49 games for the Wildcats.

He helped Weber State win three Big-Sky Conference Championships and appear in the FCS playoffs. He was named a three-time First Team All-Big Sky Conference (2020-22), Second Team All-Big Sky Conference in 2019, and an All-American in 2022.

Then, he transferred to BYU in 2023 making 47 tackles (27 solos, 20 assists), 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three forced fumbles, 11 pass breakups, five interceptions, and one touchdown in 12 games for the Cougars. He was graded the third-highest defensive back player by Pro Football Focus.
