Rafael Lantigua’s home run leads Lehigh Valley to a shutout win over the RailRiders

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (65-47, 19-19) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (66-34, 28-10) played game six on Saturday night from Coca-Cola Park. Adonis Medina (0-2, 5.14 ERA) was on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Kenta Maeda (3-4,5.97 ERA) of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Lehigh Valley starter Adonis Medina pitched 4.2 scoreless innings. He allowed four hits, three walks, and five strikeouts throwing 90 pitches, of which 55 were strikes.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Lehigh Valley center fielder Johan Rojas hit an RBI double to center field. Justin Crawford scored for a 1-0 lead. It was Rojas’s second double of the season and third RBI of the year.

Moving to the bottom of the seventh inning, Lehigh Valley third baseman Rafael Lantigua hit Joel Kuhnel’s sinker for a two-run home run at 340 feet to left field for a 3-0 lead. It was Lantigua’s fifth home run of the season and 40th RBI of the year.

Nolan Hoffman pitched for Lehigh Valley at the top of the eighth inning. He allowed one hit and struck out four batters throwing 31 pitches, of which 22 were strikes to end the game. The IronPigs shut out the RailRiders 3-0. The series is knotted up at three apiece with one game left to play. It was also the first shutout for Lehigh Valley since July 10th in Syracuse.

Lehigh Valley finished the night with six hits, went 3 for 8 with runners in scoring position, and left three men on base. The bullpen pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and seven strikeouts.

The win went to Lehigh Valley relief pitcher Ryan Cusick for his first win of the season. He pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and three strikeouts throwing 22 pitches, of which 12 were strikes. Nolan Hoffman earned his third save of the season, and the loss went to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Kenta Maeda.

The IronPigs and RailRiders concluded the seven-game series on Sunday at 1:35 pm.
