The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (62-44, 16-16) concluded a six-game series on Sunday afternoon against the Worcester Red Sox (55-52, 14-19) at Polar Park. Adonis Medina (0-1, 3.60 ERA) was on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Richard Fitts (1-1, 5.25 ERA) of Worcester.
At the top of the first inning, Lehigh Valley catcher Garrett Stubbs hit an RBI single to right field. Justin Crawford scored for a 1-0 lead. It was Stubbs’s 42nd RBI of the season.
In the bottom of the first inning, Worcester center fielder Jhostynxon Garcia hit Medina’s sinker for a two-run home run at 380 feet to center field. The Red Sox took a 2-1 lead. It was Garcia’s 15th home run of the season. Later, a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Nathan Hickey scored Vaughn Grissom for a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, a pickoff error attempt by Adonis Medina scored Jhostynxon Garcia for a 4-1 lead. Medina finished the game pitching four innings. He allowed two hits, four runs, five walks, and one strikeout throwing 67 pitches, of which 35 were strikes.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Worcester third baseman Nate Eaton hit an RBI single to left field. Nick Sogard scored for a 5-1 lead. Then, second baseman Mikey Romero hit Ryan Cusick’s sinker for a three-run home run at 417 feet to center field. Worcester extended their lead to 8-1. It was Romero’s first Triple-A home run of the season.
Moving to the bottom of the seventh inning, Worcester second baseman Mikey Romero hit David Robertson’s slider for a three-run home run at 408 feet to right-center field for an 11-1 lead. It was Romero’s second home run of the day.
Lehigh Valley’s offense struggled the rest of the way as they lost to the Red Sox 11-1. They finished the afternoon with two hits, committed one error, went 1 for 3 with runners in scoring position, and left three men on base.
Lehigh Valley’s bullpen pitched four innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs, three walks, and six strikeouts. The IronPigs take two of six from the Red Sox. The loss went to Lehigh Valley starter Adonis Medina. It was his second loss of the season, and the win went to Worcester starter Richard Fitts.
Lehigh Valley returns to Coca-Cola Park to begin a seven-game homestand starting Tuesday against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at 7:05 pm.
