The NTT IndyCar Series visited WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday afternoon for the Java House Grand Prix of Monterey from Monterey, California. Alex Palou started the race on the pole, with Pato O’Ward starting second.
Alex Palou led the opening 25 laps. During the time he was leading laps, there were two cautions. On the fourth lap, Kyffin Simpson tapped Felix Rosenqvist at Turn 6, and Jacob Abel had no brakes before slamming into the tire barrier at Turn 2.
Nolan Siegel was the new leader on lap 26. On the same lap, Kyle Kirkwood punted Rinus VeeKay, sending him spinning at Turn 3. Siegel continued to lead until lap 37 when he made a pit stop, and Alex Palou took the lead.
There were two more cautions after Palou took the lead. On lap 78, Marcus Ericsson got control of the car and spun at Turn 7, and on lap 85, Santino Ferrucci lost control and spun around at Turn 8.
Alex Palou led the final 58 laps to win his eighth race of the season by 3.7965 seconds over Christian Lundgaard. Palou led 84 laps. It was his 14th career IndyCar win. His win ties him with Sebastian Bourdais, Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, Al Unser Jr., and Tony Bettenhausen. The last driver to win eight races in a season was Sebastian Bourdais in 2007 (Champ Car). Palou extends his points lead over Pato O’Ward in the championship standings by 121 points.
Colton Herta, Pato O’Ward, and Scott Dixon rounded out the top five. Callum Ilott, Will Power, Marcus Armstrong, Christian Rasmussen, and Scott McLaughlin rounded out the top ten. There were five cautions for 13 yards, and 162 passes, of which 113 were for positions.
