The NASCAR Cup Series visited the streets of Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday afternoon in the Grant Park 165. Shane van Gisbergen, who won the pole and the race in the Xfinity Series on Saturday, started the race on the pole with Michael McDowell starting second.

On the third lap of the race, Carson Hocevar’s car broke a suspension before making contact with both the inside and outside walls of Turn 10, causing a pileup as he blocked the roadway, and no one had anywhere to go. Among those involved were Austin Dillon, Brad Keselowski, Todd Gilliland, Daniel Suárez, Riley Herbst, and reigning Repco Supercars champion Will Brown.

Michael McDowell led the opening 31 laps on his way to winning the first stage. However, McDowell’s car had a throttle pedal cable issue and went behind the wall and taking him out of contention. He finished in 32nd place. Chase Briscoe took the lead from Ryan Blaney on the final lap to win the second stage.

In the final stage, Shane van Gisbergen passed Briscoe for the lead on lap 60. He led the final 16 laps holding off Ty Gibbs before the race ended under caution when Cody Ware slammed into the tire barrier at Turn 6. It appeared he had broken something in the car before the crash happened.

Shane van Gisbergen would win the race leading a total of 26 laps. It was his second Chicago Street Race win in three seasons, and he completed the weekend sweep. It was also his second win of the season and the third of his career. Ty Gibbs, Tyler Reddick, Denny Hamlin, and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five. A.J. Allmendinger, Ryan Preece, Alex Bowman, Austin Hill, and Ross Chastain rounded out the top ten.

There were six lead changes among five drivers and seven cautions for 15 laps. The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Sonoma Raceway next Sunday at 3:30 pm on TNT.
