The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (52-32) took on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (45-37) in game four on Saturday night from PNC Field. Adonis Medina (0-0, 0.00 ERA) was on the mound for Lehigh Valley against Allan Winans (7-0, 0.90 ERA) of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
This was Medina’s first game for Lehigh Valley since 2021. This year in Tacoma, he was 3-2, with a 5.03 ERA, allowed 37 hits, 24 runs, 19 earned runs, one home run, 18 walks, and 26 strikeouts in 34 innings playing 27 games.
In the bottom of the first inning, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre first baseman T.J. Rumfield hit a two-run RBI single to left field. Jesus Rodriguez and Spencer Jones scored to give the RailRiders a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre center fielder Everson Pereira drove in two more runs to make it 4-0.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre blew the game open in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman Jesus Rodriguez hit a two-run double to right field that made it 6-0. Next, a sacrifice fly by Spencer Jones to center field made it 7-0.
Then, Everson Pereira hit an RBI double to center field scoring Jesus Rodriguez for an 8-0 lead. T.J. Rumfield concluded the inning by hitting an RBI single to right field scoring Periera for a 9-0 lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre kept piling on the runs. Everson Pereira hit a two-run home run and Duke Ellis hit a two-run double for a 13-0 lead. At the top of the sixth inning, Lehigh Valley first baseman Weston Wilson hit an RBI single to left field scoring Rodolfo Castro to give the IronPigs their first run of the game. The RailRiders led the IronPigs 13-1.
Lehigh Valley right fielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. hit an RBI double to right field scoring Justin Crawford, which made it 13-2. It was Rincones Jr.’s eleventh double of the season. A sacrifice fly by Donovan Walton made it 13-3. Lehigh Valley had a chance to add more runs with the bases loaded with two outs, but Rafael Lantigua grounded into a forceout at second base to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would one of the runs back when Everson Pereira hit Ryan Cusick’s four-seam fastball for a solo home run at 366 feet to right field for a 14-3 lead. It was his second home run and sixth RBI of the night.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Everson Pereira would get a triple to complete the cycle. It was the first cycle by a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre player since 2017. A groundout by T.J. Rumfield brought home Pereira, and a home run by Bryan De La Cruz made it 16-3.
At the top of the ninth inning, Lehigh Valley had the bases loaded when catcher Garrett Stubbs hit a two-run RBI single to center field. The IronPigs trailed the RailRiders 16-5 with one out.
Then, second baseman Donovan Walton hit an RBI single to center field scoring Weston Wilson, and it was now 16-6. That would be it for Lehigh Valley, who went on to lose to the RailRiders by the final score of 16-6. Lehigh Valley had 12 hits, committed two errors, went 6 for 11 with runners in scoring position, and left nine men on base.
The loss went to Lehigh Valley starter Adonis Medina. He pitched two innings, allowing three hits, four runs, five walks, and two strikeouts throwing 60 pitches, of which 28 were strikes. The win went to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Allan Winans.
The IronPigs and RailRiders conclude the series on Sunday at 1:05 pm.
