
The Ottawa Redblacks (1-2) visited the Calgary Stampeders (2-1) on a rainy Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium. Dustin Crum got the start for Ottawa at quarterback while Dru Brown continued to recover from a hip injury.
First Quarter:
Calgary got the ball to start the game. There was not much offense due to the heavy rain which affected the majority of this game. Middle of the first quarter, Ottawa quarterback Dustin Crum threw one pass for 12 yards, and carried the ball twice for 17 yards, while running back Daniel Adeboboye had two carries for 15 yards.
A time count penalty set Ottawa back and kicker Louis Ward made a 34-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 9:14 left. Later in the first quarter, Calgary kicker Rene Paredes missed a 43-yard field goal and it was returned by DeVonte Dedmon for 14 yards. An illegal blocking penalty was called on Ottawa and the ball was placed on their one-yard line.
Calgary’s defense put points on the board when defensive lineman Jaylon Hutchings bulldozed his way past the offensive linemen to sack Dustin Crum in the endzone for a safety. It was now 3-2 with 4:33 left.
Late in the first quarter, Calgary’s offense moved the ball up to Ottawa’s 19-yard line. On third down, they decided to go for it rather than kick a field goal. Ottawa’s defense stopped them to force a turnover. The score remained 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
Ottawa’s offense had 90 yards (57 yards passing, 38 yards rushing, 5 yards lost), and Calgary’s offense had 90 yards (57 yards passing, 38 yards rushing, 5 yards lost).
Second Quarter:
In the second quarter, Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. ran for two yards before losing the ball and it was recovered by Ottawa defensive back Amari Henderson with 12:18 left. Ottawa went two-and-out on their next possession.
Later in the second quarter, Calgary went on an eight-play drive for 85 yards, including Dedrick Mills’s five carries for 49 yards leading them to Ottawa’s one-yard line. On third down, the team went for it instead of kicking a field goal. Calgary backup quarterback P.J. Walker tried to score the touchdown but Ottawa’s defense stopped him forcing a turnover.
Late in the first quarter, Ottawa’s offense, led by running back William Stanback, had five carries for 64 yards, and Dustin Crum threw two passes for 25 yards moving the ball up to Calgary’s 14-yard line. Crum threw two incomplete passes, which led to kicker Lewis Ward making a 22-yard field goal for a 6-2 lead at halftime.
First Half Stats:
Ottawa had 173 yards on offense (43 yards passing, 131 yards rushing, 1 yard lost), 10 first downs, 0 for 1 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 26 yards. Quarterback Dustin Crum completed 4 of 12 passes (33%) for 43 yards, and five carries for 36 yards.
Running back William Stanback had seven carries for 76 yards, and wide receiver Keelan White made two catches for 29 yards. For Stanback, his 76 rushing yards earned him 5,000 career rushing yards. The defense made one tackle for loss, one sack, and forced three turnovers.
Calgary had 191 yards on offense (67 yards passing, 129 yards rushing, 5 yards lost), 8 first downs, 0 for 2 in the red zone, and the team was penalized two times for 20 yards. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. completed 5 of 8 passes (63%) for 67 yards, and three carries for 21 yards.
Running back Dedrick Mills had 12 carries for 82 yards. Wide receiver Clint Barnes made one catch for 27 yards, and Dominique Rhymes made one catch for 22 yards. The defense made one sack.
Third Quarter:
Calgary would get the ball again to start the second half. After going two-and-out, punter Fraser Masin punted the ball 77 yards into the end zone for a single point. It was now 6-3 with 13:54 left.
It was Ottawa’s turn with the football. Ottawa quarterback Dustin Crum rushed for 13 yards, followed by completing a 23-yard pass to Eugene Lewis. Ottawa also got a roughing the passer penalty adding 15 yards placing the ball on Calgary’s 19-yard line. After two incomplete passes, kicker Lewis Ward made a 27-yard field goal making it 9-3 with 11:05 left.
Later, Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. completed two passes for 35 yards to Ottawa’s 35-yard line. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 42-yard field goal to pull within three points 9-6 with 9:06 left. The two teams continued to trade field goals. Ottawa’s offense gained 37 yards moving the ball to Calgary’s 25-yard line. Kicker Lewis Ward made a 33-yard field goal for a 12-6 lead with 3:40 left.
Late in the third quarter, Calgary’s offense gained 26 yards moving the ball up to Ottawa’s 40-yard line. Kicker Rene Paredes made a 51-yard field goal and it was now 12-9 heading into the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
Early in the fourth quarter, Ottawa punter Richie Leone punted the ball 92 yards. Calgary returner Erik Brooks watched the ball bounce into the endzone and out of bounds for a single point. Ottawa led 13-9 with 11:20 left of the game.
Calgary’s offense gained 35 yards on their next possession moving the ball to Ottawa’s 35-yard line. Kicker Rene Paredes made his third field goal of the day for 42 yards. It was now 13-12 with 6:46 left.
Ottawa running back Daniel Adeboboye took command on the next drive. He had two carries for 61 yards, including a 52-yard run at Calgary’s 8-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Dustin Crum threw to Adeboboye for the touchdown. It was the first touchdown of the game. Ottawa led 20-12 with 4:42 left to cap off a three-play drive for 70 yards.
The touchdown sparked Ottawa. On the third play, Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.’s pass was intercepted by Charlie Ringland on their 52-yard line. Late in the game, Ottawa had a chance to seal the game, but kicker Lewis Ward missed the 49-yard field goal.
Ottawa’s defense forced another turnover and they would go on to defeat the Calgary Stampeders by the final score of 20-12.
Final Stats:
Ottawa had 349 yards on offense (111 yards passing, 239 yards rushing, 1 yard lost), 18 first downs, 1 for 3 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 26 yards. Quarterback Dustin Crum completed 9 of 22 passes (41%) for 111 yards, one touchdown, and 11 carries for 64 yards.
Running back Daniel Adeboboye led the rushers with 10 carries for 96 yards, two catches for 17 yards, and one touchdown. William Stanback had nine carries for 82 yards.
Wide receiver Kalil Pimpleton led the receivers making two catches for 31 yards, while Keelan White made two catches for 29 yards. The defense made 41 tackles, one tackle for loss, two sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Calgary had 367 yards on offense (218 yards passing, 160 yards rushing, 11 yards lost), 18 first downs, 0 for 2 in the red zone, and the team was penalized four times for 40 yards. Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. completed 17 of 32 passes (53.1%) for 218 yards, one interception, and three carries for 21 yards.
Running back Dedrick Mills led the rushers with 15 carries for 96 yards. Wide receiver Clark Barnes led the receivers making two catches for 61 yards, and Dominique Rhymes made three catches for 58 yards. The defense made 42 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, and a safety.
