The NTT IndyCar Series visited the World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, on Sunday night for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500. Will Power started the race on the pole, and Scott McLaughlin started second. During the warm-up laps, McLaughlin’s car would not start. After several minutes, he got the car started and was on his way.

On the opening lap, David Malukas passed both McLaughlin and Power to take the lead. Power reported a vibration on his right front tire and he hit the wall at Turn 4 on lap four to bring out the first caution. Malukas led the opening 50 laps before making his first pit stop.

Scott McLaughlin was the new leader on lap 51. On lap 47, Devlin DeFrancesco spun and made contact with the wall at Turn 1 leading to the second caution. McLaughlin led 51 laps before making a green flag pit stop on lap 102. He would later suffer a mechanical issue and was out of the race. Kyle Kirkwood and Alexander Rossi took turns leading laps before Josef Newgarden took the lead on lap 105.

Twenty-five laps later, Louis Foster got loose and hit the wall exiting off Turn 4. The car came down right in front of Newgarden and Josef went airborne and slid on the racetrack before coming to a complete stop. Both drivers were treated and released from the infield care center.

Moving into the action, the last caution that happened was on lap 195 when David Malukas made slight contact with the wall at Turn 4. Late in the race, Callum Ilott was leading with five laps to go. He was short on fuel and made a pit stop as Kyle Kirkwood took the lead. Kirkwood led the final five laps to win the race by 0.5398 seconds over Pato O’Ward.

It was Kirkwood’s third win of the season, the seventh win of his IndyCar career, and his first win on an oval track. Christian Rasmussen, Scott Dixon, and Santino Ferrucci rounded out the top five. There were 20 lead changes among 14 drivers and four cautions for 47 laps.

The NTT IndyCar Series heads to Road America next Sunday at 1:30 pm on Fox. Purchase tickets for all IndyCar races today at StubHub.
