
The NASCAR Cup Series visited Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico, on Sunday afternoon in the Viva Mexico 250.
Shane van Gisbergen started the race on the pole with Ryan Preece starting second. Denny Hamlin was not at this race due to the birth of his son, and Ryan Truex substituted for him.
On the second lap, rain brought on the first caution. Many teams went to pit road to put on wet tires. It was one of six cautions throughout the race. On lap eight, an eight-car crash at Turn 1 brought out the second caution. The drivers involved were Kyle Busch, Chase Briscoe, Kyle Larson, A.J. Allmendinger, Zane Smith, Chase Elliott, Justin Haley, and Todd Gilliland.
Chris Buescher, Austin Cindric, Ty Gibbs, and Ryan Preece all led laps. Preece led the final four laps to win the first stage. Shane van Gisbergen dominated the race leading 60 laps, including winning the second stage on his way to winning his first race of the season by 16.567 seconds over Christopher Bell. It was Gisbergen’s second career Cup Series win.
The rest of the top five finishers were Chase Elliott third, Alex Bowman, fourth, and Michael McDowell fifth. John H. Nemechek, Chase Briscoe, Cole Custer, William Byron, and Chris Buescher rounded out the top ten. Ty Gibbs, who led the second most laps in the race (27) finished in eleventh place. There were 14 lead changes among eight drivers.
